With Ilya Sorokin playing so well, it has made Semyon Varlamov expendable and the Isles will look to trade him at the NHL trade deadline.

Monday’s NHL rumors have the New York Islanders looking to trade Semyon Varlamov. The season did not start off the way Varlamov had wanted. He was on injured reserved and it took longer than expected for him to make it back into the lineup.

With Varlamov being on injured reserve for so long it gave backup goalie Ilya Sorokin time to showcase his skills and he has taken over the role as the #1 goalie for the Islanders and made Varlamov expendable.

Stefan Rosner of NYIHockeyNow suggests the Islanders should looking at trading Varlamov, 33, at the 2022 NHL trade deadline. The move would free up some much needed salary cap space for the team.

Rosner went on to say the Isles could than trade for a backup goalie like Arizona’s Scott Wedgewood ($825 K), Pittsburgh’s Louis Domingue ($750 K), or Buffalo’s Dustin Tokarski ($725 K) as they would be potential, cost-effective options.

Varlamov does have a 16 team no-trade clause and still has one year remaining on his contract at an AAV of $5 million.
