The Carolina Hurricanes visit the New York Islanders tonight, and the biggest daily fantasy hockey opportunity might not be Carolina’s leading scorer. It’s the combination of Logan Stankoven’s shooting volume, Jackson Blake’s power-play role and an Islanders defense missing Ryan Pulock.

Managing the NHLTradeRumor.com hockey pools and evaluating dynasty-league rosters has taught me to look beyond the previous game’s points. The questions I start with are where a player is skating, how often he shoots and whether his power-play deployment justifies his DFS salary.

Carolina enters Thursday at 12-3-2, while New York is 7-5-2. Both teams have been defensively effective, which makes blindly stacking expensive forwards risky. I’m prioritizing Carolina’s established attacking combinations, Matthew Schaefer’s workload on the Islanders blue line and a goaltending decision that could materially change the fantasy outlook.

Hurricanes vs. Islanders Injury Report — November 5

Several absences directly affect tonight’s DFS projections. Carolina remains without captain Jordan Staal, while Taylor Hall is a potential game-time return. New York is expected to remain without Mathew Barzal, Matias Maccelli and Ryan Pulock despite all three returning to non-contact practice Wednesday.

Injury status as reported Thursday morning, November 5, 2026

NYIMatias MaccelliExpected outLower-body injury; reduces offensive depth on the wing.
NYICalum RitchieOut — IRLower-body injury; additional loss of center depth.
NYIAlexander RomanovOut — IRKnee injury; unavailable on the blue line.

Statuses reflect reports available Thursday morning; official lineups and game-time availability can change.

DFS takeaway: Pulock’s absence increases the importance of Schaefer’s minutes against an aggressive forecheck. Hall’s possible return also matters for Carolina’s projected combinations, especially Stankoven and Blake.

Carolina Hurricanes vs. New York Islanders Betting Odds

Carolina enters as the road favorite, but the listed 5.5-goal total is a reminder that this isn’t necessarily a game to overload with expensive fantasy stacks.

Core DFS Strategy: Line Combinations and Matchup Advantages

Carolina’s Stankoven Line Offers Shot-Based Upside

Carolina’s recent combinations feature Nikolaj Ehlers, Logan Stankoven and Jackson Blake together at five-on-five. That trio played 11:44 together against Nashville on November 3, the most of any Hurricanes forward line in that game.

Stankoven has 10 goals through 17 games and 52 shots on goal, averaging just over three shots per appearance. That matters in DFS formats rewarding shots independently of goals. Blake has 17 points, including 13 assists, and has produced on Carolina’s first power-play unit.

Stankoven has been on PP2, while Blake has worked with Sebastian Aho, Ehlers, Andrei Svechnikov and Shayne Gostisbehere on PP1. I prefer the even-strength Stankoven-Blake mini-stack over assuming both have identical special-teams exposure.

Why Aho’s Listed Line Number Can Be Misleading

Sebastian Aho has 21 points in 17 games, including nine goals. His recent five-on-five combination with William Carrier and Andrei Svechnikov has appeared lower in the usage-based lineup, but Aho remains central to the first power play.

Four of Aho’s nine goals have come with the man advantage. That gives him a different scoring route from Stankoven: less dependence on five-on-five shot volume and greater exposure to PP1. An Aho-Svechnikov pairing provides a tournament alternative to the Stankoven-Blake stack; I would not automatically use all four forwards in the same salary-constrained lineup.

Islanders’ Horvat Line and Schaefer’s Expanded Role

Wednesday’s Islanders practice featured Simon Holmström, Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri together. Their projected power-play roles also overlap, making them New York’s clearest forward stack.

However, Carolina is allowing approximately 22 shots on goal per game, among the league’s stingiest defensive rates. New York managed only 18 shots against Edmonton in its previous game. That makes a full Islanders forward stack difficult to justify in cash contests.

Instead, I’m targeting Matthew Schaefer as a defenseman who can generate fantasy points through shots, assists and potentially blocks, even if New York’s offense is limited.

Start ‘Em & Sit ‘Em: Best DFS Picks

Start ‘Em

  • Logan Stankoven, CAR — Primary shot-volume target. His 52 shots and 10 goals in 17 games create multiple scoring paths. PP2 deployment slightly limits his special-teams ceiling compared with a PP1 forward.
  • Jackson Blake, CAR — Stacking target. Blake’s 17 points, seven-game point streak and PP1 deployment offer correlation with Ehlers and Stankoven at even strength.
  • Matthew Schaefer, NYI — Multiple scoring routes. Schaefer has 14 points and 52 shots in 14 games. Heavy ice time and PP1 usage make him attractive even against a difficult opponent.
  • Sebastian Aho, CAR — Premium tournament option. Nine goals, 12 assists and a PP1 role reward builds focused on special-teams scoring.

Sit ‘Em or Limit Exposure

  • Seth Jarvis, CAR — Conditional cash-game fade. Jarvis has seven points in six games since returning, but recent even-strength partners Jordan Martinook and Mark Jankowski and PP2 deployment make a premium salary harder to justify without a role change.
  • Kyle Palmieri, NYI — Lower-priority cash option. Top-line and PP1 opportunities are appealing, but Carolina’s shot suppression limits his floor. He is more interesting as a contrarian tournament selection.

Value rule: Rankings reflect player roles, not verified DraftKings or FanDuel salaries. Check contest-specific pricing before lock.

Featured Fantasy Player Comparison: Aho vs. Schaefer

Aho represents Carolina’s power-play scoring upside; Schaefer represents New York’s heavy-minute defensive production. They’re different positions with different fantasy scoring profiles.

Goaltending Outlook: Shot Volume vs. Save Quality

Carolina: Pyotr Kochetkov or Brandon Bussi?

Carolina’s starting decision is especially important. Kochetkov opened 10-1 with a .922 save percentage, but the Hurricanes’ official preview also identifies Bussi as an option following Kochetkov’s loss to Nashville.

New York’s limited shooting volume creates an unusual DFS problem: a Carolina goalie could win without accumulating enough saves to justify a premium salary. Kochetkov offers the stronger form profile. Bussi may offer salary relief if priced as a backup, but neither provides an automatic high-save ceiling.

My approach: Consider a confirmed Kochetkov start as a cash-game building block if reasonably priced. Consider Bussi only after starting confirmation and salary evaluation. Never lock either goalie from an early projection alone.

Islanders: Ilya Sorokin’s Difficult but Intriguing Upside

Sorokin is projected to start, although the Islanders had not formally announced their starter in the published game preview. Carolina averages roughly 33 shots a game. If Sorokin sees that workload, he could produce a useful save total even in a loss, but Carolina’s multiple productive lines create considerable scoring risk.

For cash games, Sorokin is a high-risk play against the favored Hurricanes. For tournaments, potential save volume creates a path to a competitive fantasy result if New York keeps the game close.

Final DFS Verdict and Lineup-Building Strategy

Preferred Carolina stack: Logan Stankoven + Jackson Blake, with Nikolaj Ehlers as an optional third player.

Premium alternative: Sebastian Aho + Andrei Svechnikov, with Shayne Gostisbehere as a PP1 correlation option.

Preferred Islanders one-off: Matthew Schaefer.

Goalie decision: Wait for confirmed starters before choosing a cash-game netminder.

Carolina should create the better offensive opportunities, but the Islanders’ defensive structure makes selectivity more important than simply stacking stars. My approach is to concentrate on Carolina’s shot producers, use Schaefer as New York’s individual upside option and remain flexible until both starters are confirmed.
