Will the Minnesota Wild make a Shea Weber trade so they can use his contract for LTIR purposes?

The Minnesota Wild are in salary cap hell for the next three years with the buyout of Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. The buyouts against the Wild salary cap are $12.7 million, then $14.7 million and $14.7 million. Ouch.

Elliotte Friedman was on Hockey Night in Canada’s 32 Thoughts segment on Saturday and reported that the Montreal Canadiens are willing to trade Shea Webers contract.

Michael Russo of The Athletic states if the Wild made a Weber trade, the team would have to pay him only $6 million total the next four years plus the prorated remainder of this season.

Russo went on to say, Weber carries an annual $7.857 million cap hit that could be placed on long-term injured reserve that can be used to subtract from the cap hit of Parise and Suters contract.

GM Bill Guerin has some decisions to make as he does not need Weber’s contract until the summer but there are other teams interested in a Weber trade right now and if Guerin wants the LTIR, he will have to make the trade at the deadline.
