NHL Trade Rumors have been floating around the last few months over the Montreal Canadiens completing a Jeff Petry trade.
What is making a Petry trade tough is his age and contract. He is 34, has a $6.25 million cap hit and owns a modified 15 team no-trade clause. Rumors are Petry would welcome a trade to any American team as his family has moved from Montreal to Michigan.
Eric Engels was on the Sportsnet Habs broadcast yesterday and stated teams like the Dallas Stars and Detroit Red Wings would prefer getting Petry at $5M AAV but the Canadiens are not willing to retain salary as of right now.
Engels went on to say, if teams want Petry they need to take him as is.
The March 21 NHL trade deadline is still over a month away so a lot can change but if the Habs want to get a decent return on Petry, they will likely have to eat some salary for a trade to happen.
Nobody wants Petry as is.
