It is looking like the Arizona Coyotes are following the steps of the Toronto Maple Leafs in tanking a season in hope of getting the best odds to draft Shane Wright, the top rated prospect in the upcoming 2022 NHL draft.

With the new draft rules, if the Coyotes were to finish last but not win the draft lottery, the lowest they could drop is to the 3rd position. American centre Logan Cooley is the No. 2 rated prospect followed by Finnish right winger Joakim Kemell.

Arizona has a plethora of picks in this year’s draft, owning the Av’s first round pick, though it is top-10 protected, and a first-round pick from either the Canadiens or the Carolina Hurricanes as a result of their trade that sent Christian Dvorak to Montreal.

The Coyotes will receive the better of the Habs or Carolina’s pick, unless one of the picks fall into the top 10, in which the Coyotes will receive the worse of the two.
