The Detroit Red Wings are playing better than anyone expected this year. They are currently fighting for a wildcard playoff spot with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins. It is most likely they will miss the playoffs but they franchise is going in the right direction.

Jeff Marek on Sportsnet.com talks about the Red Wings and states, Moritz Seider is already the best defenceman on the Red Wings. He’s the building block on the back end. That much is obvious to anyone who even casually glances at this team.

Marek went on to say, Nick Leddy is on an expiring contract and if things get goofy around defencemen at the NHL trade deadline, who knows how much GM Steve Yzerman can get?

Leddy will be an interesting trade chip to watch. If Stanley Cup contenders need a boost from injuries, want a reliable defenceman for a playoff run, Leddy could end up fetching a 1st round pick.

Leddy, 30, is an UFA at the end of the season, his cap hit is $5.5 million and he does not own a no-trade clause.
