Still, Boston’s power-play efficiency from last year is worth remembering if its established offensive players receive meaningful man-advantage time.

For Boston, the most interesting storyline is the Hagens-Minten-Khusnutdinov combination. Sturm has kept the three together early in camp, and Hagens entered NHL camp after scoring six goals across two games at the Bruins’ Prospects Showcase. Their chemistry could make all three more interesting late-round fantasy names if it survives camp.

Minten is particularly interesting because NHL.com’s season preview projects him for a top-nine role and second-unit power-play opportunities. Boston’s larger regular-season fantasy picture includes the arrival of JJ Peterka, who is projected alongside Pavel Zacha and Pastrnak.

Washington has a different evaluation happening. The Capitals confirmed that Ivan Miroshnichenko, Jonny Brodzinski, Josh Dunne and Bogdan Trineyev are headed to Boston, while 2025 first-round pick Lynden Lakovic is also expected to play. Top Five Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins Fantasy Scorers From Last Season

Last season’s scoring distribution shows two very different profiles. Washington’s top five were separated by only 12 points. Boston was far more top-heavy: Pastrnak reached 100 points, 32 more than the Bruins’ second-leading scorer.

Hockey-Reference lists Washington’s top five as Ovechkin, Wilson, Chychrun, Strome and Aliaksei Protas. Boston’s were Pastrnak, Morgan Geekie, Zacha, McAvoy and Viktor Arvidsson.

Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value

Washington’s most significant confirmed absence is Rasmus Sandin, who underwent surgery in April to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. He has resumed skating, but the Capitals originally established a six-to-nine-month recovery window. His absence creates additional blue-line opportunity and makes Washington’s defense pairings, particularly the usage of Cole Hutson, Timothy Liljegren and other options — worth monitoring throughout camp.

Boston general manager Don Sweeney said before camp that the Bruins were healthy. McAvoy’s situation must be separated from an injury: he is serving a six-game regular-season suspension stemming from Game 6 against Buffalo last spring. That suspension affects Boston’s opening regular-season schedule and potentially creates early power-play and top-pair opportunity for another defenseman, but it should not be described as an injury.

No starting goalie had been officially confirmed for this exhibition at the time of publication. In preseason, I would expect teams to prioritize evaluation and workload management, so fantasy managers should be cautious about reading too much into one goaltender’s final stat line.

I’m giving Boston a narrow edge, but this is one prediction where the 4-3 score matters less than the deployment underneath it.

Boston produced slightly more offense last season and had the much better power play. The Bruins also swept the three-game 2025-26 season series. At TD Garden, that is enough for me to lean Boston in a one-goal game.

The uncertainty is enormous. Washington is bringing a competitive roster group, and its official preview says the traveling lineup contains six likely top-12 forwards and four likely top-six defensemen. Preseason goalie workloads are not confirmed, established players may have their minutes controlled, and one prospect-heavy line can completely change the scoring environment.

My fantasy advantage goes slightly to Boston’s offensive side, particularly if Hagens, Minten and Khusnutdinov receive meaningful minutes together. For Washington, Miroshnichenko is the player I am most interested in watching because this is exactly the type of exhibition game that can influence whether a skilled young winger earns a larger NHL opportunity.

More important than the final score will be special-teams usage. If Hagens or Minten receive legitimate power-play minutes, or if Washington gives one of its younger players a prominent role alongside NHL veterans, that is information fantasy managers can carry into draft preparation. A preseason goal can be forgotten by Monday; a new PP1 or PP2 role can affect an entire season.
