Could Nikita Kucherov’s remarkable run with the Tampa Bay Lightning really be nearing its end? His agent has now delivered one of the strongest indications yet that a separation is possible, and the Montreal Canadiens remain an intriguing potential destination.
During the November 4 episode of DFO Insider with Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta, agent Dan Milstein suggested the relationship between Kucherov’s camp and Lightning management may be beyond repair. As Steven Ellis reported for Daily Faceoff, Milstein believes it may be “time to move on” after this season.
I’ve tracked NHL trades and salary-cap developments for NHLTradeRumor.com since February 2010. What makes this situation fascinating isn’t simply that Kucherov wants out. It’s that Tampa Bay could keep its biggest offensive weapon for another Stanley Cup run and then lose him for nothing.
The Canadiens have been linked to Kucherov through Elliotte Friedman’s reporting, although no Montreal offer has been confirmed. The Lightning publicly maintain they have no intention of trading him.
Nikita Kucherov Trade Rumors: What Jeff Marek’s Interview Revealed
Milstein’s comments add context to Kucherov’s October 30 trade request. The superstar previously told reporters his frustration involved communication and respect, rather than simply money, according to NHL.com.
Kucherov, 33, is in the final season of an eight-year, $76 million contract carrying a $9.5 million annual cap hit. He can become an unrestricted free agent in July 2027 and has a modified no-trade clause limiting potential destinations to 10 approved teams.
Milstein also emphasized Kucherov’s strong relationships with his teammates and coach Jon Cooper. A departure is therefore not necessarily imminent. For additional context, see our earlier report on why Tampa Bay rejected his trade request.
Could Montreal Actually Afford Nikita Kucherov?
According to PuckPedia, Montreal has approximately $1.87 million in current cap space. Tampa Bay has roughly $4.29 million. Simply absorbing Kucherov’s full $9.5 million hit is not realistic without corresponding salary going out.
Mock Trade: Canadiens and Lightning Blockbuster Proposal
| Team | Receives | Salary-cap treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Montreal Canadiens | Nikita Kucherov (RW) | $4.75M hit; Tampa retains 50% of his $9.5M AAV. |
| Tampa Bay Lightning | Zack Bolduc, Owen Beck, 2027 first-round pick and 2028 second-round pick | Bolduc carries a $4.2M AAV. Beck’s NHL cap hit applies only if on the NHL roster. |
2026–27 Salary Cap Impact
| Club | Current space | Net cap change | Illustrative space after trade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Montreal | $1.87M | +$0.55M | ~$1.32M |
| Tampa Bay | $4.29M | -$0.55M | ~$4.84M |
Model assumes Bolduc is on Montreal’s NHL roster, Beck remains outside Tampa Bay’s NHL roster and retention lasts only through 2026–27. Figures are illustrative, not an official transaction calculation. Actual cap space changes with daily roster moves.
Montreal would gain an elite offensive winger while surrendering a young NHL forward, a centre prospect and two draft selections. Tampa Bay would acquire longer-term assets while retaining substantial dead cap for this season.
That is a workable cap structure, but it does not guarantee Tampa Bay would accept the return. The price could be considerably higher for an Atlantic Division rival, particularly if Kucherov agreed to an extension.
Why Nikita Kucherov Makes Sense for the Montreal Canadiens
Imagine a healthy Montreal lineup with Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Kucherov together. Suzuki’s two-way intelligence and Caufield’s finishing could complement Kucherov’s elite playmaking. A second attacking unit involving Juraj Slafkovsky and Ivan Demidov would give opponents another difficult matchup.
The power-play fit deserves closer examination. Kucherov, Caufield and Demidov all thrive with the puck. Montreal would need carefully designed rotations rather than three forwards competing for the same shooting and passing lanes.
There’s also a bigger issue: the extension. Montreal projects to have roughly $29.72 million in 2027–28 cap room before completing its roster. Committing an enormous portion of that space to one 34-year-old player could complicate long-term planning around its young core.
What Tampa Bay Would Demand in a Kucherov Trade
I don’t see general manager Julien BriseBois approaching this as a traditional rebuild. Tampa Bay still has Brayden Point, Brandon Hagel, Victor Hedman and Andrei Vasilevskiy. Its championship window matters today.
A Kucherov departure would remove the primary creative engine from both its top six and power play. That makes an immediate NHL contributor particularly valuable, alongside premium picks and prospects.
The closest useful trade comparison is Mikko Rantanen’s 2025 move to Dallas, which brought Carolina Logan Stankoven, two first-rounders and two third-rounders. Rantanen also signed an extension, making that a more expensive benchmark than a pure rental.
Our earlier coverage examined Pierre LeBrun’s report of widespread Kucherov interest. Interest is not the same as a formal offer, and BriseBois controls whether negotiations proceed.
Nikita Kucherov Trade Rumor Meter
Low probability: Montreal is a credible potential destination, but Tampa Bay’s refusal to trade Kucherov, the divisional rivalry and an expensive extension make an immediate deal unlikely.
Rob Ellis editorial assessment • November 6, 2026 • Not a statistical forecastRob Ellis’ Final Take: A Trade or a 2027 Free-Agent Exit?
My prediction is that Kucherov finishes the season in Tampa Bay unless the relationship deteriorates further or the Lightning’s competitive outlook changes.
Milstein’s interview makes a long-term separation sound increasingly plausible. But trading Kucherov to Montreal while Tampa Bay is chasing another Stanley Cup would require an extraordinary offer.
For Canadiens GM Kent Hughes, the smarter approach may be patience. Paying a massive trade price and then negotiating an extension is far riskier than investigating Kucherov’s interest in July 2027 without sacrificing multiple premium assets.
