Cutter Gauthier enters Friday’s Anaheim Ducks–Calgary Flames game with nine goals in four games, including seven on the power play. That’s an impossible streak to ignore, but it isn’t a reason to pay any price in daily fantasy. When I build NHLTradeRumor.com hockey pool lineups or evaluate players for my dynasty leagues, I separate hot shooting from repeatable opportunity. Gauthier’s first power-play role and his connection with Mikael Granlund and Beckett Sennecke are the reasons he remains playable even if his scoring rate cools.

Anaheim is also playing its second game in two nights after a 5–4 victory in Edmonton on Thursday, when Sennecke and Pavel Mintyukov each scored twice. Calgary gets last change and can deploy Mikael Backlund’s line against Anaheim’s hottest unit. The hidden DFS decision may come in goal: Lukas Dostal and Dustin Wolf are listed as unconfirmed projections, while Calgary has just activated Devin Cooley. My preferred strategy is to build around correlated opportunities, not simply chase Thursday’s box score.

Important update: Calgary goaltender Devin Cooley was activated from injured reserve on November 5 and should not be listed as injured. His availability could change the starter projection. Sources: Covers, PuckPedia and RotoWire.

Fantasy impact: Terry’s absence preserves meaningful Anaheim opportunities for Gauthier, Sennecke and Granlund. With Huberdeau unavailable, Joel Farabee and Matt Coronato are the Flames forwards I trust most for scoring exposure. I will not project extra power-play minutes for Othmann until his availability is confirmed.

Fantasy Hockey Strategy: The Power-Play Battle and Calgary’s Last Change

Why Gauthier–Granlund–Sennecke is the Ducks stack I want

The scoring connection is more compelling than a simple hot-hand narrative. Anaheim’s most recent shift data groups Gauthier, Granlund and Sennecke together at five-on-five, and all three join Leo Carlsson and Jackson LaCombe on its first power-play unit. That overlap matters: a Gauthier goal can create simultaneous assists for a center and a defenseman. If I can afford a three-player build, this unit gives me better correlation than selecting unrelated Anaheim scorers.

The caution is price. The Ducks’ power play has converted at an extraordinary rate during this streak, and no player sustains nine goals every four games. For tournaments, pairing two members of the line with LaCombe may be a better salary allocation than forcing all four in. For conservative formats, I prioritize stable ice time, power-play access and shots.

Calgary’s counter: Farabee, Backlund and Coronato

Calgary’s latest club-published lineup put Joel Farabee–Mikael Backlund–Matt Coronato together. Their home-ice deployment should give the Flames an opportunity to match Backlund against Gauthier’s dangerous group. That is a tougher five-on-five assignment for Anaheim than an unopposed top-six mismatch, but it also means Coronato and Farabee should spend meaningful shifts around the puck.

Calgary’s projected PP1 includes Farabee, Coronato, Morgan Frost, Matvei Gridin and Zayne Parekh. Coronato has 14 points through 16 games, with seven power-play points; Farabee leads the Flames with 15. I like a Farabee–Coronato mini-stack in tournaments because it captures their five-on-five connection and shared special-teams opportunities without requiring an entire line.

How the back-to-back changes roster construction

Anaheim generated only 21 shots in Thursday’s win but finished five goals. That’s efficient scoring, not automatically evidence of 40-shot offensive dominance. Calgary has been better at limiting dangerous chances since its dreadful opening stretch, so I won’t automatically stack every Ducks skater. The most defensible approach is to pursue Anaheim’s concentrated first-unit production and look for Calgary’s counterattack or power-play value.

DFS Start ‘Em and Sit ‘Em: Best Ducks–Flames Picks

Start ‘Em — players I would prioritize

  • Cutter Gauthier, Anaheim LW: My highest-ceiling goal scorer. Nine goals in four games deserve attention, but the better explanation is PP1 access, steady shot volume and a direct role alongside Granlund and Sennecke. Strong tournament play; compare his salary against other elite shooters before paying up.
  • Beckett Sennecke, Anaheim RW: Two goals and an assist against Edmonton, four shots, and exposure to the same scoring line and first power play. He can benefit even on a night Gauthier doesn’t score; I prefer this correlation to an unsupported points-chasing narrative.
  • Joel Farabee, Calgary LW: Calgary’s points leader with 15 in 16 games and a first-line, first-unit power-play role. He offers a more balanced point path than a pure finisher, especially if Anaheim’s travel and second-game fatigue lead to penalties or coverage errors.
  • Jackson LaCombe, Anaheim D: The defenseman logged 33:09 against Edmonton and picked up a power-play assist. That workload is unusually large and should not be projected as his normal ice time, but the PP1 quarterback role makes him a high-upside stack partner.

Sit ‘Em — players I would limit in scoring-focused DFS

  • Alex Killorn, Anaheim LW: He can still benefit from shifts with Leo Carlsson, but he was on PP2 in the latest deployment data and recorded no shots Thursday. If his salary is near a first-unit scorer, I would redirect that budget to the top Ducks power play.
  • Adam Klapka, Calgary RW: His fourth-line scoring role and PP2 assignment make him a weak choice in goal-and-assist-heavy contests. He is a different proposition in leagues awarding significant points for hits, where his physical production can provide a niche floor.

Projected Starting Goalies: Volume vs. Save Quality

Anaheim: Lukas Dostal projected, not confirmed

Daily Faceoff lists Lukas Dostal as Anaheim’s unconfirmed option. Laurent Brossoit made 23 saves on 27 shots Thursday, his third straight appearance, which makes a rotation plausible on the back-to-back. Ville Husso is another roster option and some projection feeds disagree. My DFS approach is to wait for an actual warmup or team confirmation rather than treating any of these names as locked.

If Dostal starts, the opportunity is likely to be save volume against a Calgary attack averaging approximately 2.4 goals per game, but recent Anaheim defensive leakage creates goals-against risk. I would need a favorable salary before treating a Ducks goalie as a cash-game anchor.

Calgary: Dustin Wolf projected; Devin Cooley newly available

Dustin Wolf is Daily Faceoff’s unconfirmed Calgary projection, but the Flames activated Devin Cooley from injured reserve Thursday. That makes the crease less settled than a simple projected-starter grid suggests. The Flames’ defense has improved after its early struggles; however, Anaheim’s concentrated PP1 firepower raises the danger of conceding a goal on comparatively few high-quality chances.

Wolf or Cooley could still have tournament value if Calgary wins and Anaheim produces enough shots for a strong save count. My final decision depends on the confirmed starter, his posted fantasy salary and the scoring rules. I would avoid committing to a goalie before the morning skate and pre-game warmups resolve the competition.

My Final DFS Verdict for Ducks vs. Flames

Preferred Anaheim build: Gauthier + Sennecke, with LaCombe as a power-play correlation option. Preferred Calgary build: Farabee + Coronato, potentially with Parekh where defenseman pricing permits. The main risk to the Anaheim side is shooting regression plus a challenging Backlund matchup; the main risk to Calgary exposure is the Ducks scoring on special teams before the Flames can establish their home-ice game plan. Confirm the line combinations, goalies and prices before locking any lineup.
