Toronto Sun: Teams are calling GM Brad Treliving about Jiri Hudler and Kris Russell. There was talk the Flames were going to re-sign Russell but the word is the two sides aren’t close to a deal but he could fetch north of $5 million on the open market and Calgary may not pay that out. Some wonder if Treliving will be able to get a goalie at this deadline.
Carolina Hurricanes getting calls about availability Eric Staal
Toronto Sun: Carolina Hurricanes GM Ron Francis is looking to trade Eric Staal even though they are in the playoff hunt. Staal, who told reporters in Ottawa last week he “wouldn’t be crushed” if he got dealt. Teams are also interested in defenceman Ron Hainsey along with forwards Kris Versteeg and Nathan Gerbe.
Flyers looking to be active at the NHL Trade Deadline
Toronto Sun: Philadelphia Flyers GM Ron Hextall would like to be active at the NHL trade deadline. Hextall has been calling teams to see if anybody is willing to take defencemen Mark Streit and Nick Schultz off his hands. Philly also wouldn’t mind moving winger Matt Read.
