Alex DeBrincat Wants to Stay With the Detroit Red Wings
One of today’s most important NHL News developments came from Alex DeBrincat.
The Detroit Red Wings forward said he wants to remain with his hometown team despite an offseason filled with uncertainty, including Dylan Larkin’s trade request, Patrick Kane’s departure and Detroit’s ongoing search for a general manager.
DeBrincat is entering the final season of the four-year, $31.5 million contract he signed in 2023. His $7.875 million cap hit represents approximately 7.6 percent of the NHL’s $104 million 2026-27 salary-cap ceiling.
More importantly, DeBrincat is coming off a 41-goal, 85-point season and led Detroit in both categories. Contract discussions are essentially waiting for the Red Wings’ management situation to be resolved.
That changes the tone around Detroit considerably.
Instead of wondering whether Larkin’s request could trigger an exodus, the Red Wings now know one of their most productive offensive players wants to be part of the solution.
My read: Detroit should make DeBrincat an early priority for its next general manager. Elite goal scorers are difficult enough to acquire without allowing a proven 40-goal player who actually wants to stay to reach unrestricted free agency.
NHL Trade Rumors Intensify Before Training Camp
Connor Hellebuyck Situation Remains Unresolved in Winnipeg
Connor Hellebuyck’s situation has moved beyond ordinary NHL trade rumors.
Hellebuyck publicly confirmed on August 27 that he had requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets months earlier. Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry said this week the Jets cannot spend their time worrying about the speculation and will continue treating Hellebuyck as a teammate while he remains with the organization.
That is an important update because it confirms earlier offseason trade chatter was substantially accurate: Hellebuyck genuinely wants a move.
His $8.5 million cap hit takes up approximately 8.2 percent of the current $104 million ceiling, and five seasons remain on the contract.
From Winnipeg’s perspective, there is no reason to make a bad trade simply because camp is approaching. Hellebuyck is a three-time Vezina Trophy winner, and that kind of player requires a premium return.
The problem is leverage.
Every team now knows the player wants out.
Quinn Hughes Contract Watch Could Become Minnesota’s Biggest Story
The Quinn Hughes situation is different because there has been no public trade request.
But the uncertainty matters.
Hughes is entering the final season of his current contract with the Minnesota Wild, and reports Wednesday indicated there still was no agreement on an extension. Wild general manager Bill Guerin is expected to have further face-to-face discussions with Hughes as the defenseman returns to Minnesota.
Hughes currently carries a $7.85 million AAV, just 7.5 percent of this season’s NHL cap.
That number will rise dramatically on his next contract.
Cale Makar recently reset the elite-defenseman market by signing an eight-year, $163.2 million extension carrying a record $20.4 million annual value. NHL.com’s analysis specifically identified Hughes as one of the defensemen positioned to benefit from that contract.
This is where Minnesota’s decision becomes fascinating.
There is no reason to panic today. But if Hughes reaches the regular season without an extension, every week that passes will increase speculation about his future.
Aleksander Barkov Gives Florida a Huge Injury Boost
Some of today’s biggest NHL News is unquestionably positive.
Aleksander Barkov says he has no concerns about the right knee that required ACL and MCL surgery after he was injured on the opening day of training camp last September.
Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season but returned to competitive hockey at the World Championship in May. He now says he is excited and ready for Panthers training camp.
This could be one of the league’s most important returning-player stories.
Florida already added Brady Tkachuk in a blockbuster offseason trade, and Tkachuk said this week he is excited about chasing a Stanley Cup alongside brother Matthew and the rest of Florida’s loaded roster.
Put Barkov back in the middle of that group and Florida becomes significantly more dangerous.
Zach Werenski Pushes Back Against Blue Jackets Trade Talk
Zach Werenski also provided clarity Wednesday.
The reigning Norris Trophy winner said Columbus is where he wants to be and indicated he hopes eventually to sign another contract with the Blue Jackets.
That is notable after offseason uncertainty included a potential move to Dallas that Werenski reportedly vetoed. He cannot sign an extension until July 1, 2027.
Werenski’s current $9.583 million cap hit accounts for approximately 9.2 percent of this season’s $104 million ceiling.
The comments substantially cool the immediate trade-rumor angle.
Sidney Crosby and Penguins Discuss Another Contract
Sidney Crosby’s name has generated its own share of speculation, but the latest development points toward Pittsburgh rather than away from it.
Crosby confirmed his agent Pat Brisson and Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas have discussed another contract.
The 39-year-old said he would like to continue playing for a number of years but admitted projecting exactly how many seasons he has left is difficult at his age. Crosby had 74 points in 68 games last season and has now averaged at least a point per game for an NHL-record 21 consecutive seasons.
His current $8.7 million AAV represents roughly 8.4 percent of this season’s salary-cap ceiling.
For anyone waiting for Crosby trade speculation to explode again, contract talks with Pittsburgh are an important counterweight.
New Jersey Could Enter Camp With Three Goalies
One quieter NHL News storyline worth tracking is in New Jersey.
The Devils are entering training camp with Jake Allen, David Rittich and Nico Daws competing in what could become a three-goalie setup following the offseason trade of Jacob Markstrom to Florida.
Daws signed a two-year deal worth $1.1 million annually, while the Devils are looking for someone to emerge from an unusually open competition.
Goaltending has a habit of determining seasons that otherwise look strong on paper, and this could become one of New Jersey’s biggest early storylines.

My biggest observation from September 9 is that training camp is becoming the unofficial deadline for clarity.
DeBrincat wants to stay.
Werenski wants to stay.
Crosby is talking about staying.
Barkov appears ready to return.
But Hellebuyck wants out, while Minnesota still needs a long-term answer from Hughes.
Those are very different situations, but all of them become more complicated once players begin skating every day, reporters enter NHL dressing rooms and unanswered questions become daily questions.
The next seven to ten days could therefore produce considerably more movement than a typical early-September NHL news cycle.
