Chris Kreider suddenly becoming available might have created exactly the kind of late-offseason opportunity the Montreal Canadiens should investigate.
The Anaheim Ducks placed Kreider on unconditional waivers for the purpose of terminating his contract, a remarkable development considering the veteran winger just produced 22 goals and 50 points in 75 games. If he clears, Kreider can become an unrestricted free agent and choose his next destination. Reports also indicate that the 35-year-old would prefer to return east, closer to family.
That is where Montreal becomes interesting.
There is currently no confirmed report that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has offered Kreider a contract, and that distinction matters. But New York reporter Arthur Staple has floated Montreal and Buffalo as possible destinations while pointing toward Kreider’s existing relationships with people inside the Canadiens organization.
From my perspective, this is exactly the kind of situation Montreal should explore: minimal acquisition cost, short-term flexibility and a proven veteran who can still score around the net.
And unlike many NHL trade rumors, the salary-cap math actually works.
Why Chris Kreider Suddenly Makes Sense for the Montreal Canadiens
The most intriguing part of these Chris Kreider rumors isn’t simply that another recognizable veteran has become available.
It’s how he became available.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Anaheim’s sudden cap squeeze contributed to the Ducks pursuing a mutual contract termination with Kreider. Anaheim had $6.5 million of cap space tied to Kreider’s contract, while the organization is dealing with major financial commitments to its young core. Friedman also reported that trade alternatives were explored, but Anaheim did not like the possibility of attaching additional assets to facilitate a deal.
That changes the equation completely for Montreal.
Instead of asking whether the Canadiens should trade a draft pick, prospect or young roster player for Kreider, Kent Hughes could potentially acquire him for nothing more than salary.
That is a dramatically different risk profile.

Kreider isn’t the 50-goal threat he once appeared capable of becoming, and expecting that version of the player at 35 would be unrealistic.
But 22 goals and 50 points in 75 games for the Anaheim Ducks last season demonstrate that he can still contribute offensively. He also scored eight power-play goals while averaging 17:02 of ice time.
His game has always been particularly effective around the crease.
Kreider can provide size, straight-line speed, screens, deflections and a legitimate net-front presence on the power play. Those skills don’t require Montreal to build an entire line around him.
That’s important.
If I’m the Canadiens, I’m not pursuing Kreider because I expect him to drive a first line. I’m pursuing him because he could complement Montreal’s younger skill players, give Martin St. Louis another power-play option and provide playoff-tested depth without sacrificing a premium future asset.
There is also the familiarity factor.
Kreider played with St. Louis in New York and spent years in the Rangers organization while current Canadiens executive vice-president Jeff Gorton was running hockey operations there. Staple pointed toward those relationships when discussing Montreal as a possible destination.
That doesn’t mean a signing is coming.
It does mean the Montreal connection isn’t completely random.

The Canadiens Can Actually Afford Chris Kreider
This might be the strongest argument for Montreal at least making the phone call.
PuckPedia currently projects the Montreal Canadiens at approximately $94.22 million against the NHL’s $104 million salary-cap ceiling, leaving roughly $9.78 million in projected cap space with a 21-player active roster.
That creates several possibilities.
A hypothetical one-year, $3 million Kreider contract would leave Montreal with approximately $6.78 million in projected room.
At $4 million, Montreal would still have roughly $5.78 million.
Even at $5 million, the Canadiens would retain approximately $4.78 million based on today’s projected roster.
Those are NHLTradeRumor.com calculations based on PuckPedia’s current Montreal projection, not reported contract demands.
For me, the sweet spot would be a one-year contract at $4 million or less.
That keeps the risk contained while preserving enough flexibility for injuries, roster adjustments and an in-season move.

Here’s the unusual part.
If Kreider clears unconditional waivers and his Anaheim contract is terminated, his traditional trade value effectively becomes irrelevant because Montreal wouldn’t need to surrender a draft pick or prospect to acquire him.
The evaluation becomes an acquisition-value calculation instead.
My NHLTradeRumor.com model gives Kreider an 82/100 Canadiens Acquisition Value Score if Montreal can sign him for one season at $4 million or less.
The biggest positives are roster fit, playoff experience and zero trade-asset cost.
The biggest negative is obvious: age.
At 35, Montreal should not be committing multiple seasons based on what Kreider accomplished earlier in his career. There is legitimate decline risk, and the Canadiens should avoid allowing a recognizable name to override their long-term roster plan.
But a one-year contract is different.
That could give Montreal a useful veteran while allowing Kreider to rebuild his market ahead of another trip to unrestricted free agency.
Anaheim’s Decision Tells Us Something Important
It’s also important not to interpret Anaheim’s decision as simply declaring Kreider incapable of helping an NHL team.
The Anaheim Ducks are dealing with a very specific salary-cap problem.
Kreider carried a $6.5 million cap hit for 2026-27, and Sportsnet reported that only $4 million in actual salary remained after his July 1 signing bonus. Anaheim’s changing cap picture and the need to handle significant young-player commitments pushed general manager Pat Verbeek toward an unusual solution.
In fact, Kreider was productive enough last season that seeing a 50-point player go through this process is unusual.
That distinction matters for Montreal.
The Canadiens wouldn’t be acquiring Anaheim’s $6.5 million contract.
They would potentially be negotiating an entirely new contract at a price Kreider and his representatives are willing to accept.
Update: The Earlier Kreider Report Has Now Been Confirmed
The situation developed quickly Wednesday.
Friedman’s initial report indicated that the Ducks and Kreider were expected to proceed with waivers for the purpose of terminating the contract. Later reports from Reuters, CBS Sports and other outlets confirmed that Kreider had indeed been placed on unconditional waivers.
If he clears, attention immediately shifts from Anaheim to the teams willing to pursue him.
Montreal should be one of the teams asking questions.
Should the Montreal Canadiens Sign Chris Kreider?
My answer is yes, at the right price and term.
A multi-year contract would make me uncomfortable.
A one-year deal around $3 million to $4 million is much more compelling.
Montreal has reached a stage where adding the right veteran doesn’t necessarily interfere with the rebuild. The key is ensuring that the veteran supports the young core instead of blocking it.
Kreider could provide net-front scoring, playoff experience, physical presence and another option for Montreal’s power play.
And because there would potentially be no trade assets leaving Montreal, Hughes could make the move without sacrificing one of the organization’s biggest advantages: its future flexibility.
There is also an undeniable historical wrinkle. Canadiens fans still associate Kreider with the collision involving Carey Price during the 2014 Eastern Conference Final. Seeing him eventually pull on a Canadiens sweater would therefore be one of the stranger full-circle NHL stories of the year.
We’re not there yet.
There has been no confirmed Kreider contract offer from the Montreal Canadiens as of this writing.
But Anaheim has unexpectedly opened a door.
Now we’ll see whether Montreal decides to walk through it.
