Mark Giordano signs a two-year contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs carrying an $800,000 AAV. What a great hometown discount the Leafs received with Giordano’s contract.

Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts segment and said that he believes the original deal for Mark Giordano was around $1 million a year and that Giordano himself was the one who shaved it down to $800K for the team.

Giordano’s new salary is a shade above the veteran minimum, which is an 88 per cent pay cut. True, it’s for his age-39 and age-40 seasons, but Giordano is still performing at a top-four level, and leaders of his ilk never fail to cash in on the open market.

Giordano has managed his money well over his career and it is not an issue at this point in his life. He feels the Toronto Maple Leafs are Stanley Cup contender and this is the place he wants to be.
