
The New York Islanders have signed fan favorite Mathew Barzal to an eight-year contract extension worth $72.3 million which gives the Isles a yearly salary cap hit of $9.150 million.
Barzal had one year left on his current contract. Mathew would have been an RFA with an $8.4 million qualifying offer next offseason. He then would have been 1 year from UFA eligibility.
Barzal, 25, was drafted 16th overall by the New York Islanders in the 1st round of the 2015 NHL entry draft. Currently over a career that spans 6 seasons, he has a total 311 points in 362 games played, and 38 playoffs points in 49 games played.
