Mason McTavish wearing a New York Rangers home jersey amid trade rumors involving the Anaheim Ducks
Anaheim Ducks forward Mason McTavish is pictured in a New York Rangers home jersey as NHL trade rumors link the young center to New York.

The New York Rangers are no longer being mentioned as a theoretical landing spot for Mason McTavish. According to NHL insider Frank Seravalli, the Rangers and Anaheim Ducks have entered advanced trade discussions involving the 23-year-old center. Seravalli stressed that a deal is not complete, but the talks have progressed far enough to make this one of the most important situations to watch around the NHL Draft.

That distinction matters. McTavish is not a rental or a distressed veteran contract. He is a former third-overall pick signed through 2030–31 at a $7 million cap hit, and he plays the premium position every team struggles to fill. He produced 17 goals and 41 points in 75 games this season, then added six points in 10 playoff games as Anaheim reached the second round.

My read is that the Ducks will not move McTavish simply to clear salary. They would need a young, controllable player who immediately improves another area of the roster, plus enough future value to justify surrendering a potential long-term top-six center. For the Rangers, that makes this a franchise-shaping retool move, not a quick offseason patch.

Why Mason McTavish makes sense for the New York Rangers

The Rangers need to make their core younger without entering a complete rebuild, and McTavish fits that objective almost perfectly.

At 23, he could become a major part of New York’s lineup for the rest of the decade. His six-year contract provides cost certainty, while his combination of size, finishing ability and experience at center gives the Rangers something that is difficult to acquire through free agency.

McTavish finished the 2025–26 season with 17 goals and 24 assists for 41 points in 75 games. That was a noticeable decline from the career-high 52 points he recorded the previous season, but it should not erase the larger body of work. He has accumulated 77 goals and 181 points through his first 304 NHL games.

The more revealing development came during the playoffs. McTavish was removed from Anaheim’s lineup for two games during its second-round series against the Vegas Golden Knights before returning for Game 4. That does not mean the Ducks have given up on him, but it does suggest that his role and standing within the organization may no longer be unquestioned.

Sometimes that type of postseason decision creates an opening for a trade that would otherwise be unthinkable.

What could the Anaheim Ducks demand for Mason McTavish?

The most logical Rangers trade piece is Braden Schneider.

Anaheim already has several talented young forwards, including Leo Carlsson, Cutter Gauthier and Beckett Sennecke. Acquiring a young right-shot defenseman who can play significant minutes would provide better positional balance.

Schneider alone would not be enough. McTavish plays a more valuable position, has greater offensive upside and is signed for five additional seasons. A realistic framework could involve Schneider, one of New York’s 2026 first-round selections and a secondary prospect or draft pick.

Here are three potential frameworks. These are original editorial proposals, not reported offers:

Framework 1: The roster-balancing trade

New York Rangers receive:

  • Mason McTavish

Anaheim Ducks receive:

  • Braden Schneider
  • A 2026 first-round pick
  • A secondary prospect or conditional pick

Framework 2: The former first-overall pick swap

New York Rangers receive:

  • Mason McTavish
  • A secondary asset

Anaheim Ducks receive:

  • Alexis Lafrenière

This would be the cleanest star-for-star framework. However, New York would have to decide whether exchanging a 24-year-old winger coming off a 57-point season for a younger center actually improves its overall forward group.

Framework 3: The veteran-and-futures package

New York Rangers receive:

  • Mason McTavish

Anaheim Ducks receive:

  • Vincent Trocheck
  • A first-round pick
  • A premium prospect

This structure appears less attractive for Anaheim because Trocheck is considerably older and has trade protection. The Ducks would likely prefer a younger centerpiece unless their priority is adding immediate leadership and playoff experience.

Original Mason McTavish trade-value model

The following NHLTR Trade Value Index is an original editorial model. It combines age, contractual control, position, production and recent role into a score out of 100.

Trade-value factorScore
Age and contractual control28/30
Positional scarcity22/25
Proven NHL production13/20
Contract efficiency7/15
Playoff performance and role6/10
Total trade-value score76/100

A score of 76 describes a premium young NHL asset who is expensive to acquire but not untouchable.

McTavish receives high marks because he is a 23-year-old center signed through his prime seasons. His score is lowered by his drop from 52 points to 41, his $7 million cap hit and the uncertainty created by his playoff usage.

The contract could become a bargain if he develops into a consistent 55-to-65-point center. It becomes much harder to justify if he settles into the 40-point range.

How a Mason McTavish trade affects the Rangers’ salary cap

PuckPedia currently projects the Rangers to have approximately $25.7 million in cap space. Based on that figure, here is the estimated impact of several McTavish scenarios:

Rangers scenarioEstimated cap space
Current projection$25.700 million
Add McTavish without outgoing salary$18.700 million
Trade Trocheck and acquire McTavish$24.325 million
Trade Lafrenière and acquire McTavish$26.150 million

These calculations exclude additional players, retained salary, bonuses, unsigned free agents and replacement-roster costs.

The Rangers can comfortably absorb McTavish’s contract. The central issue is not cap space—it is acquisition cost.

My take: The Rangers should pursue McTavish without overpaying

This is exactly the type of player New York should be targeting during a retool.

McTavish is young enough to develop alongside Lafrenière, Will Cuylle and the next generation of Rangers players, but experienced enough to contribute immediately. He would also give New York a potential succession option at center as its veteran core gets older.

However, the Rangers cannot treat him like an established first-line superstar. McTavish has never reached 60 points, his production went backward this season and his playoff role became uncertain. Those are legitimate risk factors when considering a contract carrying a $7 million cap hit.

I would be comfortable building an offer around Schneider and one premium future asset. I would not include Schneider, both first-round picks and one of New York’s best prospects. Similarly, the Rangers should not trade Lafrenière and add a significant draft pick unless Anaheim is returning another meaningful piece.

From Anaheim’s perspective, accepting a veteran-heavy offer would make little sense. If the Ducks move McTavish, they need either a young top-four defenseman or another young forward with comparable upside.

The discussions appear legitimate, but the final price will determine whether this becomes a smart Rangers retool or an unnecessary gamble on untapped potential. For now, the most important part of Seravalli’s report remains the same: the negotiations are advanced, but the trade is not done.
