Chris Kreider may unexpectedly find himself back on the NHL trade market, and this time the reason has less to do with his performance than the Anaheim Ducks’ rapidly tightening salary-cap situation.
The Hockey News’ Andre Leal recently identified Kreider, Alex Killorn and Frank Vatrano as three Ducks veterans who could potentially become cap casualties as Anaheim tries to find enough room to sign restricted free agent Cutter Gauthier. Kreider is particularly interesting because moving his entire $6.5 million cap hit would solve a huge portion of Anaheim’s problem in one transaction.
That does not mean Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek is actively shopping Kreider. There is no confirmed report of Anaheim holding trade negotiations involving the veteran winger. But when you combine Gauthier’s looming contract with Kreider entering the final year of his deal, this is the type of roster decision that deserves attention.
And from my perspective, if Anaheim ultimately decides one veteran has to go, Kreider could generate considerably more interest than a traditional salary dump.
Anaheim Ducks Cap Crunch Could Put Chris Kreider on the Trade Market
The problem facing Anaheim is straightforward.
PuckPedia currently projects the Ducks with $9,073,395 in salary-cap space against the $104 million ceiling. Gauthier remains unsigned, and speculation cited by Spector’s Hockey has suggested his next contract could land in the neighborhood of $14 million to $15 million annually.
At $14 million, Anaheim would be approximately $4.93 million short based on its current projected space.
At $15 million, that gap increases to approximately $5.93 million.
That is where Kreider becomes fascinating.
The 35-year-old has one season remaining on his contract at a $6.5 million cap hit before becoming an unrestricted free agent following the 2026-27 season.
If Anaheim traded Kreider without retaining salary and took no meaningful NHL salary back, our NHLTradeRumor.com cap calculation would increase the Ducks’ theoretical available space from approximately $9.07 million to $15.57 million.
That would be enough to accommodate even a $15 million Gauthier contract with roughly $573,000 remaining, although Anaheim would obviously have additional roster and in-season cap considerations.

Chris Kreider Still Has Real NHL Trade Value
The most important thing to remember is that Kreider isn’t coming off a disastrous season.
He recorded 22 goals and 28 assists for 50 points in 75 games during the 2025-26 regular season.
His age will naturally limit what teams are willing to surrender, but Kreider still offers qualities contenders value: size, net-front scoring, special-teams experience and extensive playoff experience.
Anaheim experienced that value firsthand.
Kreider helped the Ducks win their first playoff series since 2017, including a three-point performance in Anaheim’s series-clinching victory over Edmonton.
That’s why I don’t view Kreider as a pure cap dump.
His $6.5 million cap hit isn’t insignificant, but it is also an expiring commitment. For a contender looking for an experienced winger without committing long term, that’s a much easier contract to digest than a multi-year veteran deal.
The complication is his trade protection. Kreider carries a limited no-trade clause, meaning Anaheim doesn’t have complete freedom to send him anywhere it wants.

My read is that Anaheim shouldn’t rush this decision.
Kreider can still help this roster win. The Ducks have moved beyond simply accumulating prospects; they won a playoff round last spring and are entering a stage where experienced postseason players actually matter.
But Gauthier represents the future.
If the choice eventually becomes keeping a 35-year-old winger for one more season or securing one of Anaheim’s cornerstone young forwards long term, Verbeek has to prioritize Gauthier.
The ideal outcome would be moving Kreider for an actual asset rather than treating him as dead cap. His 22-goal, 50-point season gives Anaheim a stronger negotiating position than it would have with an unproductive veteran. A contending club looking for net-front scoring could see significant value in that profile.
That is why Chris Kreider trade rumors are worth watching as training camp approaches.
This isn’t evidence that a trade is imminent. It is evidence that Anaheim has a cap equation to solve — and Kreider’s $6.5 million contract happens to fit the equation almost perfectly.
