The NHL news cycle is picking up in a hurry as training camp moves closer, and the biggest storyline on August 12 may be one that eventually forces an actual trade.
The Anaheim Ducks have only about $9.07 million in available cap space, while unsigned restricted free agent Cutter Gauthier could potentially command somewhere in the $14 million to $15 million range. That leaves general manager Pat Verbeek facing a very real financial puzzle, with Chris Kreider, Alex Killorn and Frank Vatrano already being identified as possible salary-moving candidates.
Meanwhile, the Calgary Flames have their own roster logjam. Calgary has nine defensemen competing for six jobs, creating fresh speculation about whether Craig Conroy makes another move before camp. Zach Whitecloud’s affordable $2.75 million cap hit would make him valuable around the NHL, although I believe Calgary would need to be overwhelmed to justify subtracting one of the few experienced defenders from an increasingly young blue line.
And there are two superstar situations worth watching closely: Quinn Hughes remains unsigned to an extension in Minnesota, while the latest Elias Pettersson-to-Los Angeles chatter has received a significant reality check.
NHL News: Cutter Gauthier Contract Could Force Anaheim Ducks Trade
The Gauthier situation is the most actionable NHL rumor on the board because Anaheim eventually has to make the numbers work.
Daily Faceoff reported that 18 restricted free agents remained unsigned entering this week, with Gauthier at the top of its list. He exploded for 41 goals and 69 points in 76 games last season, giving him considerable leverage even though he is not eligible to sign an offer sheet.
Reports have placed a potential Gauthier contract in the $14 million-to-$15 million range. With Anaheim sitting at approximately $9.07 million in available cap space, something would have to give if his eventual AAV lands near those estimates.
Anaheim Ducks Cutter Gauthier Salary Cap Pressure
Chris Kreider carries a $6.5 million cap hit, Killorn $6.25 million and Vatrano approximately $4.57 million. Moving one of the first two would theoretically solve most or all of the immediate gap depending on Gauthier’s final number.
My read: Kreider may be Anaheim’s most valuable trade piece, but that is also a reason to keep him. I’d first explore whether Killorn or Vatrano could generate sufficient flexibility without weakening the Ducks as much on the ice.
Calgary Flames Have a Numbers Problem on Defense
Daniel Austin of the Calgary Sun raised the possibility of more Flames trades before the season, with Calgary carrying nine defensemen for six spots. Kevin Bahl, Simon Nemec, Zayne Parekh and Whitecloud project prominently in the mix, leaving several players competing for the remaining jobs.
Whitecloud is naturally going to attract attention because experienced right-shot defensemen making $2.75 million for two more seasons are valuable commodities.
But that doesn’t automatically mean Calgary should trade him.
Whitecloud’s departure would make an already youthful defence corps significantly younger. He also fit quickly following his January move from Vegas; in his Flames debut, he logged 22:33 and coach Ryan Huska praised his skating and decision-making.
My expectation remains that Calgary is more likely to move a player further down the depth chart unless another club is willing to overpay for Whitecloud.
Quinn Hughes Contract Rumors Refuse to Go Away
The Quinn Hughes saga remains one of the biggest NHL stories without an actual transaction attached to it.
NHL.com reported in late July that Minnesota and Hughes’ camp were continuing extension discussions, with Michael Russo suggesting a three-year structure made sense because it could eventually align Hughes’ contract timeline with brother Jack Hughes in New Jersey.
Fresh reporting this week indicates Russo still expects an extension to eventually get done. Speculation that Hughes’ loyalty to GM Bill Guerin and recognition of the enormous package Minnesota surrendered to acquire him could influence negotiations. That should be viewed as interpretation rather than evidence Hughes has committed to Minnesota long term.
That’s an important distinction.
Until a contract is signed, New Jersey speculation isn’t disappearing. But I would not interpret the lack of an August agreement as evidence a trade is imminent.
Elias Pettersson-to-Kings Rumor Gets a Reality Check
Here is an example where an earlier report is not gaining credibility as time passes.
Elias Pettersson being spotted training in Los Angeles helped fuel speculation about the Kings, but CHEK-TV’s Rick Dhaliwal pushed back on the connection. Pettersson’s wife is from Los Angeles, providing a straightforward explanation for his offseason location. Dhaliwal also reported that discussions have not advanced anywhere close to Vancouver asking Pettersson to waive his no-movement clause.
That doesn’t mean teams haven’t checked in.
It means there is a major difference between interest and an advanced trade negotiation.
For now, I would downgrade Pettersson-to-Los Angeles from an actionable rumor to something worth monitoring during the season.
Florida Panthers Enter 2026-27 With a Fascinating New Look
NHL.com’s August 12 Panthers preview highlights three major questions: how Brady and Matthew Tkachuk perform as NHL teammates, whether Jacob Markstrom and Akira Schmid can replace Sergei Bobrovsky, and whether Florida can stay healthy.
The Tkachuks already played together internationally, but this will be their first NHL season as teammates after Florida acquired Brady from Ottawa in June. Panthers GM Bill Zito believes their relationship can benefit the entire team, saying that having two teammates who “love each other unconditionally” can make a team better.
The more interesting question to me is goaltending.
Markstrom posted a .883 save percentage last season in New Jersey, while Schmid finished at .893 with Vegas. Those numbers will have to improve if Florida expects to immediately return to Stanley Cup contention following Bobrovsky’s departure for Toronto.
Former Canadiens goalie Carey Price also weighed in on Montreal’s future recently and remains bullish on the young Canadiens, including goalies Jakub Dobes and Jacob Fowler. Price said of the Canadiens’ trajectory: “It sure feels like they’re a contender.”
