NHL insider Nick Kypreos suggests the Leafs should target Mikko Rantanen if Marner departs in 2025. Will Rantanen leave the Avalanche?

The Toronto Maple Leafs are perpetually in “win-now” mode, and with Mitch Marner’s contract expiring in 2025, the rumor mill is already churning about potential replacements.

NHL insider Nick Kypreos recently suggested in his Toronto Star column that the Leafs should have a contingency plan if Marner falters in the playoffs again and they decide not to extend Marner. One name that surfaced? Colorado Avalanche superstar Mikko Rantanen.

This isn’t just idle speculation. Rantanen is also set to become a free agent in 2025, and contract talks with the Avalanche have seemingly stalled. With Nathan MacKinnon’s hefty $12.6 million cap hit setting a precedent in Colorado, it’s possible Rantanen might command more on the open market.

Why Rantanen Makes Sense for the Leafs

From a purely hockey perspective, Rantanen is a perfect fit for the Leafs. He’s a dynamic offensive force, a proven scorer, and a right-shot winger – a position of need for Toronto. Imagine a power play with Rantanen, Auston Matthews, and William Nylander! The offensive firepower would be almost unmatched.

Furthermore, Rantanen is entering his prime. At 28 years old in 2025, he’ll be looking for a long-term deal and a chance to compete for Stanley Cups. Toronto offers both.

The Hurdles to Overcome

Of course, acquiring a player of Rantanen’s caliber won’t be easy. They’d also be facing stiff competition from other contenders vying for Rantanen’s services.

Then there’s the question of whether Rantanen even wants to leave Colorado. Despite the contract uncertainty, he’s a key part of a successful Avalanche team.

My Take

While it’s still early, I wouldn’t dismiss the possibility of Rantanen landing in Toronto. The Leafs have shown a willingness to make bold moves, and Rantanen represents a potential game-changer. If the Avalanche can’t lock him up long-term, expect Leafs GM Brad Treliving to be among the first to make a call. This is a situation worth monitoring closely.

  1. Give one good reason why Rantanen would want to come to Toronto? This isn’t any type of smack talk, just a real question.
