It’s no secret that Timothy Liljegren’s future with the Toronto Maple Leafs is uncertain. After sliding down the depth chart and with a $3 million cap hit, he’s become a prime trade candidate. David Morassutti of Sportsnet recently suggested the Utah Hockey Club as a potential landing spot, and it’s a rumor worth exploring.
Why Utah Makes Sense
Utah’s blueline is currently hurting with injuries to key players like Sean Durzi and John Marino. They need defensive depth, and Liljegren, despite his recent struggles in Toronto, still possesses the potential to be a solid contributor. He’s a young, right-shot defenseman with 197 games of NHL experience. He’s a decent puck-mover and skater who could thrive with a change of scenery and a more defined role.
From Toronto’s perspective, a trade would free up much-needed cap space and potentially bring in assets to address other needs. While the Leafs reportedly aren’t rushing to move him, the right offer could certainly expedite the process.
The Challenges
Of course, there are hurdles to overcome. Liljegren’s $3 million cap hit could be a sticking point for Utah, especially if they’re unsure about his long-term fit. The Leafs might also be hesitant to give up on Liljegren too soon, especially with their own injury concerns on defense.
My Take
I believe this trade has the potential to benefit both teams. Utah gets a player who can immediately help their depleted defense, and Toronto gets some cap relief and potentially a draft pick or prospect in return. However, it will likely come down to the specifics of the deal and whether both teams can find common ground on the return.
This is a situation worth monitoring closely. Liljegren’s time in Toronto seems to be coming to an end, and Utah could be the perfect destination for him to restart his career.
