The early 2026-27 regular season is already delivering generational moments, and the NHL News cycle is buzzing after an unforgettable Wednesday night four-game slate. Hockey fans witnessed the greatest player of the modern era rewrite the league record books in the Battle of Alberta, while the league’s newest 18-year-old phenom put on an absolute clinic in the Pacific Northwest.
Connor McDavid Breaks Wayne Gretzky’s NHL Record
Whenever you break a record held by “The Great One,” it commands the top spot in NHL News. In the Edmonton Oilers‘ dominant 4-0 shutout victory over the rival Calgary Flames, captain Connor McDavid tallied two assists to extend his season-opening assist streak to an unprecedented 13 games.
That remarkable run officially pushes McDavid past the previous 12-game record shared by Wayne Gretzky (set in 1982-83 with Edmonton), Ken Linseman, and Sebastian Aho. McDavid wasted no time securing the milestone, setting up Mathieu Joseph on Edmonton’s very first shot of the night in the opening frame before feeding Kasperi Kapanen on a second-period power play. Through 13 games, McDavid’s stat line looks like a video game: 8 goals, 28 assists, and 36 points. Meanwhile, Tristan Jarry stopped all 24 shots he faced for his first shutout of the campaign, and defenseman Mattias Ekholm found the back of the net in his return from a concussion.
Gavin McKenna’s 3-Point Breakout Spoiled Late
In Seattle, Toronto Maple Leafs No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna proved exactly why he is the most hyped teenager in hockey. The 18-year-old sensation notched his first career two-goal game and three-point night, scoring a pair of power-play goals in the first two periods. McKenna became the youngest Maple Leafs player to record a multi-goal game since Jack Hamilton in 1944, joining franchise legends Wendel Clark and Vincent Damphousse as only the third 18-year-old Leaf in the past 80 years to pot multiple goals in a game.
McKenna also helped set up Auston Matthews‘ dramatic 6-on-5 game-tying goal with 1:30 remaining in regulation. However, the celebration was short-lived. Seattle Kraken defenseman Brandon Montour blasted a slap shot past Sergei Bobrovsky with just 34 seconds left on the clock, handing Seattle a thrilling 5-4 victory and spoiling McKenna’s milestone night. To make matters tougher for Toronto, forward Kirill Marchenko was ruled week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
Avalanche Surge Past Devils; Capitals Roll at Home
Elsewhere around the league, the Colorado Avalanche used a four-goal third-period explosion to snap the New Jersey Devils‘ four-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory in Denver. Nazem Kadri and Jaden Schwartz each posted a goal and an assist, while veteran blueliner Brent Burns notched two helpers to pass Chris Chelios and Erik Karlsson on the all-time defenseman scoring list (949 points). Gabriel Landeskog also scored a power-play tally and became Colorado’s all-time franchise leader in hits (1,572).
In the nation’s capital, Alex Tuch and Jordan Kyrou each scored twice, and Dylan Strome dished out three assists as the Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2, wrapping up a stellar 4-1-0 homestand behind 23 saves from Logan Thompson.
