Seattle’s pursuit of a top-line winger has put Shane Wright back under the NHL trade spotlight. The intriguing part isn’t simply that he could be moved—it’s the kind of player the Kraken want back.

The Seattle Kraken are still searching for a proven scoring winger, and Shane Wright may be one of the assets general manager Jason Botterill could use to land one. According to TSN insider Darren Dreger’s latest reporting, Seattle is open to using its depth in young centres to acquire a genuine top-line offensive weapon.

Wright, the fourth-overall selection in the 2022 NHL Draft, has been connected to trade discussions for months. His camp previously sought a fresh start, although the 22-year-old publicly committed himself to the Kraken before this season. That makes the latest report significant, but it does not mean a deal is imminent.

Here’s the question worth asking: Would Seattle really trade a young right-shot centre before discovering his ceiling—or does Wright offer its best chance to land the scorer the roster has been missing?

With Jared McCann injured and Toronto visiting Seattle tonight, the club’s next offensive decision suddenly looks more consequential. There is no confirmed destination, no completed trade and no publicly identified player-for-player offer.

Why the Seattle Kraken Are Considering a Major Trade

Dreger’s report centres on Seattle’s long-running search for a top-line scoring winger. The idea is straightforward: the Kraken have invested heavily in their young middle-six talent but lack a consistent high-end finisher who forces opposing teams to change their defensive matchups.

That search has become more urgent. The NHL reported on October 25 that Jared McCann would miss approximately 10 weeks with a lower-body injury. He had eight points in 11 appearances before getting hurt. Losing an established offensive contributor for that long tests an already uneven scoring group.

Seattle has alternatives down the middle. Matty Beniers is a foundational piece, while Berkly Catton has made an encouraging start with nine points through 12 games. Wright has lately been deployed on the right side of a line with Catton and Kaapo Kakko. For a former high draft pick whose biggest selling point is playing centre, that deployment is worth watching.

My read: Seattle’s winger search is not evidence that management has given up on Wright. It suggests Botterill is weighing two different timelines—waiting for a prospect to develop versus adding a player who can drive a top line right now. Those are very different decisions, and the Kraken should demand a meaningful return before choosing the second.

Shane Wright Scoring Trend: What Changed?

27 2025–26

2024–25 0.56 P/GP
2025–26 0.36 P/GP
2026–27 (12 games) 0.33 P/GP

NHLTR Analysis: Wright’s production has declined from 0.56 to approximately 0.33 points per game. However, his changing role and limited 2026–27 sample make it too early to conclude that his offensive development has stalled.

Shane Wright Trade Value: Why the Numbers Tell Only Half the Story

Wright scored 19 goals and 44 points in 2024–25, the kind of production that suggested he could become a reliable middle-six centre with another offensive gear. He followed that with 12 goals and 27 points last season. Through his first 12 games this year, he has three goals and one assist.

That decline is real, but it does not prove his development has stalled. Wright remains a young right-shot centre whose role has shifted. An acquiring team would be betting on future growth, not purchasing a proven 60-point player.

The risk for Seattle is selling at the wrong moment. If Wright becomes a productive second-line centre elsewhere, trading him for an older winger with a shorter competitive window could age poorly. If the Kraken instead acquire a genuine top-six difference-maker who has multiple years of control, moving Wright becomes easier to justify.

What Is Shane Wright Worth Today?

69/100 High-upside NHL asset
Development risk remains
Age and Upside 23 / 25
Recent NHL Production 14 / 30
Contract and Team Control 20 / 25
Role and Development Certainty 12 / 20

NHLTR Trade Analysis: Wright’s age, draft pedigree and contract control make him an appealing trade asset. However, his recent NHL production and uncertain long-term role limit his current valuation. Seattle should prioritize a proven top-six scoring winger with multiple years of team control rather than exchange Wright for a short-term rental.

NHLTR Trade Value Index methodology: Age and upside (25 points), NHL production (30), contract and control (25), and role certainty (20). Component grades are editorial assessments, not a statistically validated NHL trade market price. This score is not an insider-reported valuation or confirmed trade offer.

What Would Seattle Actually Demand for Shane Wright?

The phrase asking price needs context. Dreger reports Seattle wants a top-line winger and could move one of its young centres. He has not publicly identified a specific winger offered for Wright, nor established that Wright alone would satisfy the other team’s price. A true first-line scorer with contract term would likely be a difficult one-for-one acquisition.

I would favour a deal built around Wright for a proven winger young enough to help beyond this season. Seattle might have to add an asset. A short-term rental would be poor value: trading a cost-controlled 22-year-old for a few months of scoring risks creating a larger problem.

Seattle Kraken Salary Cap: Could a Blockbuster Actually Fit?

Financial flexibility is not Seattle’s biggest obstacle. A roughly $16.2 million projected cap-space snapshot gives the Kraken room to take on a significant salary. Wright’s own 2026–27 cap charge is only $886,666, and his entry-level contract ends with restricted-free-agent rights in 2027.

Could Seattle Afford a Blockbuster Trade?

The Seattle Kraken have the flexibility to pursue an established scoring winger. Here’s how three hypothetical trade scenarios could affect their cap space.

$16.2M Approx. Starting
Cap Room
$0.887M Shane Wright
Outgoing Cap Hit
$8M Example Incoming
Winger Cap Hit
Three Hypothetical Trade Scenarios
$11.1M Remaining Cap Room
$6M Incoming Winger
$9.1M Remaining Cap Room
$8M Incoming Winger
$7.1M Remaining Cap Room
$10M Incoming Winger

NHLTR Cap Analysis: Seattle’s primary obstacle is finding the right trade partner, not simply clearing salary. Trading Shane Wright is not required solely to make room for a significant winger contract.

Formula: Starting projected cap space + Wright’s outgoing $886,666 cap hit – hypothetical incoming winger cap hit. Results rounded to the nearest $0.1M. Illustrative scenarios only. Actual NHL cap space depends on transaction timing, bonuses, retained salary, replacement roster costs and other moves. Data reference: PuckPedia Seattle Kraken . Starting cap space is an approximate October 28, 2026 snapshot, not a live value.

The key point: Seattle does not need to trade Wright to create cap room. It could absorb a substantial contract already. A move would be about roster construction, not financial desperation.

Has the Earlier Shane Wright Trade Reporting Been Proven Right?

The interest in moving Wright did not begin this week. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported earlier in 2026 that Seattle was considering trading him. Wright’s agent, Kurt Overhardt, later discussed the possibility of finding a new destination. Yet no deal was completed during the offseason.

At September training camp, Wright told FOX 13 Seattle, “I’m here, committed to the team.” Botterill likewise emphasized helping Wright develop and keeping private conversations private. That is the necessary counterweight to any headline implying a trade request guarantees a trade.

So what has held up? The earlier reporting accurately identified genuine trade interest and dialogue. What has not happened is a move. Wright remains a Kraken, and today’s renewed search for a scoring winger shows that Seattle’s roster-building problem is still unresolved.

What Happens Next for Shane Wright and the Kraken?

For now, Wright has an opportunity to force Seattle to reconsider his role through his play. A stronger run of offensive results would raise his market value and might even convince management to keep him. Conversely, if a proven winger becomes available, the Kraken’s stockpile of young centres gives Botterill a route toward a larger deal.

My prediction: Seattle will continue exploring Wright-based trade packages rather than move him for a modest return. The club can afford to be selective, but McCann’s injury raises the incentive to act. Watch for a concrete winger target, an indication that a second asset is involved, or a notable change in Wright’s usage. Those would be more meaningful signals than another round of unsourced destination guesses.
