New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin (left) and Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz (right). With Shesterkin sidelined by injury and the Rangers reportedly exploring a trade for Stolarz, speculation continues to grow about whether Toronto would consider moving its veteran netminder to New York.

The New York Rangers were already searching for answers in goal. After Thursday night’s embarrassing 7-1 defeat against the New Jersey Devils, the Anthony Stolarz trade rumors involving the Toronto Maple Leafs suddenly have a much sharper edge.

TSN insider Darren Dreger reported this week that the Rangers had explored Stolarz as a potential goaltending option following Igor Shesterkin’s season-ending injury. That is genuine insider reporting, not confirmation of an offer or advanced negotiations. But with Dylan Garand pulled after surrendering four goals on 13 shots against New Jersey, the pressure on Rangers general manager Chris Drury could be increasing.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have leverage. Stolarz is under contract through 2029-30, Toronto has Sergei Bobrovsky alongside him, and trading a proven goaltender in October can create as many problems as it solves.

My assessment is that the Rangers’ need is legitimate, but a Stolarz trade only makes sense if Toronto receives something it genuinely needs.

Why the Rangers’ 7-1 Loss Changes the Anthony Stolarz Conversation

New Jersey’s victory exposed problems far beyond New York’s crease.

Luke Hughes scored twice, the Devils struck four times in the second period, and Garand was replaced by Spencer Martin at 4:39 of the middle frame. Martin allowed another three goals, while Pavel Dorofeyev scored the Rangers’ only goal.

One disastrous start should not erase his earlier performances. New York entered Thursday’s game with a 6-2-0 record, and the Rangers were guilty of costly turnovers and defensive breakdowns.

However, there is a difference between asking an inexperienced goalie to provide temporary relief and asking him to carry playoff expectations for months.

That distinction makes Stolarz an interesting target.

What Darren Dreger Actually Reported About the Rangers and Stolarz

Discussing potential goaltending solutions on the Ray & Dregs podcast, Dreger indicated that New York had explored the possibility of acquiring Stolarz. Dreger said he believed the Rangers had “kicked tires” on the Maple Leafs goaltender.

That wording matters.

Exploring a player’s availability does not mean Toronto is shopping him. It also does not establish that the teams have exchanged formal offers.

There is another development worth watching. On October 15, the Rangers’ AHL affiliate, Hartford, signed veteran James Reimer to a professional tryout agreement.

The addition gives New York organizational insurance without immediately sacrificing draft capital or committing to another expensive NHL contract.

In other words, Drury is considering different ways to address his goaltending problem.

Why Anthony Stolarz Is an Interesting Fit for the New York Rangers

Stolarz, 32, has the size, experience and recent NHL track record to handle a demanding assignment.

He won the Stanley Cup with Florida in 2024 and subsequently delivered an outstanding first regular season in Toronto.

Consider his recent save percentages:

  • 2023-24, Florida: .925 in 27 games.
  • 2024-25, Toronto: .926 in 34 games.
  • 2025-26, Toronto: .893 in 26 games.
  • 2026-27, Toronto: .875 through his first three appearances.

The decline deserves attention. His 2025-26 performance was considerably less convincing than his previous two seasons, and his early 2026-27 results have been inconsistent.

Three games are not enough to evaluate an entire season, but the broader trend introduces legitimate uncertainty.

My view is that Stolarz should be valued as a capable NHL goaltender who could handle significant playing time, rather than a guaranteed replacement for an elite starter like Shesterkin.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Have More to Consider Than a Trade Return

Toronto’s decision starts with Sergei Bobrovsky.

The veteran carries a $7 million annual cap hit, while Stolarz counts $3.75 million. Together, they represent a $10.75 million commitment to goaltending this season.

That investment is substantial, but it also gives the Maple Leafs two experienced options across a demanding schedule.

Toronto has prospect Artur Akhtyamov in its organization, although asking a developing netminder to replace Stolarz would increase the risk associated with Bobrovsky’s workload.

General manager John Chayka must weigh the potential return against the cost of weakening his current team.

There is also a contractual complication. Stolarz’s deal extends through 2029-30 and includes a modified no-trade clause featuring a 16-team list in 2026-27.

It would be irresponsible to assume that New York is an approved destination without confirmation.

Toronto does not need to negotiate according to the Rangers’ level of urgency. That gives the Maple Leafs a considerable advantage if discussions continue.

Can the Rangers Afford Anthony Stolarz’s $3.75 Million Contract?

The salary-cap calculation is tighter than many fans might expect.

New York has approximately $3.473 million in available cap space.

Stolarz’s $3.75 million annual cap hit exceeds that amount by approximately $276,772 before any corresponding roster changes.

The transaction is not necessarily impossible. Moving another contract, adjusting the active roster or negotiating salary retention could change the numbers.

But Shesterkin’s injury does not automatically provide unlimited spending power.

The NHL’s newer long-term injury rules also distinguish ordinary LTIR from season-ending LTIR, making the team’s decision about Shesterkin’s designation particularly important.

The Hidden Problem: New York Would Be Buying Four Seasons, Not Four Months

This is where the proposed deal becomes complicated.

Stolarz has four seasons remaining on his contract, including 2026-27. New York would be acquiring a long-term commitment, not simply renting an experienced goaltender until Shesterkin returns.

Shesterkin has an annual cap hit of approximately $11.57 million. Joonas Korpisalo is also signed beyond this season at $3 million annually.

Keeping Shesterkin, Korpisalo and Stolarz into 2027-28 would create a combined annual goaltending commitment of approximately $18.32 million.

That is a significant investment in one position.

When Shesterkin returns, Stolarz would no longer be filling the Rangers’ obvious starting vacancy.

From a roster-construction standpoint, I find that financial complication more concerning than the immediate trade price.

A less expensive short-term alternative could ultimately make more sense, particularly if the Rangers believe Garand can develop into a dependable NHL option.

What Is Anthony Stolarz Worth in a Potential Rangers Trade?

The NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index evaluates Stolarz using recent performance, cap efficiency, remaining contract term, positional demand, age-related risk and trade restrictions.

The result is an editorial score of 72 out of 100.

That is not a reported asking price or a prediction that a trade will happen. It indicates that Stolarz has genuine value while carrying enough uncertainty to complicate a major transaction.

What should Toronto request?

I would begin with a meaningful draft asset or a younger, NHL-ready player who addresses an organizational need.

A right-shot defenseman is one theoretical possibility, but naming a specific Rangers player as part of a supposed offer without evidence would be misleading.

Toronto can demand a premium because it has no obligation to move Stolarz. Conversely, New York should hesitate before surrendering a valuable young asset for a 32-year-old goalie coming off a difficult season.

That difference in valuation could prevent a deal from materializing.

Why the Rangers Might Stay Patient After All

Garand’s disappointing outing followed several encouraging performances.

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan has maintained that the team’s expectations have not changed following Shesterkin’s injury.

New York also expects Korpisalo’s absence to be measured in weeks rather than the entire season. Reimer’s addition in Hartford supplies another potential depth option.

None of those players replaces Shesterkin’s elite talent. Collectively, however, they give the Rangers alternatives to an immediate blockbuster.

I would monitor Garand’s next few starts closely.

If he rebounds, Drury gains the freedom to negotiate patiently. If the Rangers continue conceding goals while their defensive structure deteriorates, pressure to find a more established solution could grow.

Toronto has its own concerns after surrendering a third-period lead in Thursday’s 5-4 overtime loss to Buffalo. Protecting its goaltending depth remains important.

Will the Maple Leafs Trade Anthony Stolarz to the Rangers?

My prediction is that New York continues exploring the goaltending market without immediately committing to an expensive Stolarz trade.

Dreger’s reporting makes the Rangers’ interest worth following. However, Toronto’s leverage, Stolarz’s contract, his modified no-trade clause and the Rangers’ long-term financial commitments complicate the possibility.

Three developments would change my assessment: verified reports of formal negotiations, confirmation that Stolarz would approve a move, or a proposed return that meaningfully improves the Maple Leafs.

Until then, the distinction is simple.

The Rangers have a genuine need in goal, and Anthony Stolarz is a legitimate player to investigate. But an inquiry is not an imminent trade.

After a 7-1 defeat, New York may feel pressure to act. The Toronto Maple Leafs do not have to share that urgency.
