Connor McDavid is the obvious fantasy name in tonight’s Battle of Alberta. The more interesting question is whether Calgary’s suddenly dangerous power play can turn Edmonton’s defensive weaknesses into an opportunity for Flames skaters.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, McDavid enters with 34 points in 12 games, Leon Draisaitl has 12 goals, and Evan Bouchard has 21 points from the blue line. Those are enormous early-season totals, but the Oilers have also allowed 42 goals. Calgary, meanwhile, has won four straight after an ugly start, and Matvei Gridin is coming off a two-goal, three-point game against Toronto.
For fantasy managers, this matchup is about two competing advantages: Edmonton’s overwhelming star power and Calgary’s chance to exploit a penalty kill operating at just 70.6%. I’m watching the first power-play deployment closely, along with the starting-goalie announcements. An unexpected top-unit assignment or crease change could matter as much as the final score. This is a regular-season game, and no unconfirmed lineup should be treated as settled.

Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
Edmonton is 8-2-2 with 18 standings points; Calgary is 5-6-0 with 10. Through their most recent completed games, the Oilers have scored 51 times in 12 contests, or 4.25 per game, compared with Calgary’s 28 in 11, or 2.55. Yet Edmonton’s 42 goals against are hardly reassuring for fantasy goalie starts, while the Flames have surrendered 41.
The special-teams contrast is where I see genuine upside on both benches. Calgary’s own power play is clicking at 30.0%, facing an Oilers penalty kill at 70.6%.
Calgary won three of four meetings in 2025-26, including the latest, a 4-3 victory on February 4, 2026.

NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers
Connor McDavid remains my highest-ceiling selection. He has supplied 26 assists already, making him valuable even when he does not score. Leon Draisaitl is the best pure goal threat here, while Evan Bouchard gives fantasy managers an unusually explosive defenseman with power-play upside.
For Calgary, I like Joel Farabee and Matt Coronato as the safer offensive watches. Matvei Gridin is my upside swing after his breakout against Toronto. I would also monitor Zayne Parekh: his offensive instincts create a higher ceiling than his short NHL track record might suggest, especially if he gets meaningful power-play time.
Projected line combinations have Farabee alongside Mikael Backlund and Coronato, with McDavid working with Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin. For goalies, Calgary’s Devin Cooley has momentum, while Edmonton’s Tristan Jarry carries risk after recent high-scoring games. Neither starter was officially confirmed at research time.

Top Five Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers Fantasy Scorers This Season
The index below measures current 2026-27 production, not my prediction for tonight. It highlights Edmonton’s steep reliance on its top three and Calgary’s more compressed scoring group.

NHLTradeRumor.com Scoring Index: Each player’s point total is indexed against his team’s leading scorer. This visualization describes past production and is not a future projection. G-A-P reflects 2026-27 regular-season totals through October 26, 2026; tied fifth-place totals are ranked by goals.
Last Season’s Top Five Scorers: 2025-26 Context
Calgary (goals-assists-points): Matt Coronato 18-27-45; Mikael Backlund 17-26-43; Morgan Frost 22-21-43; Nazem Kadri 12-29-41; Joel Farabee 20-18-38. Kadri is no longer with Calgary, a reminder that past scoring rankings are not current lineup projections.
Edmonton: Connor McDavid 48-90-138; Leon Draisaitl 35-62-97; Evan Bouchard 21-74-95; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins 20-36-56; Zach Hyman 31-21-52.
Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Calgary has been without Jonathan Huberdeau following hip surgery, while Samuel Honzek has been listed with a lower-body issue. Backlund returned against Toronto, which improves Calgary’s centre depth and supports the Farabee-Coronato combination.
Edmonton’s Zach Hyman has an upper-body concern, and Mattias Ekholm has also been listed with an upper-body issue. If Hyman misses out, Podkolzin or another available winger could collect additional high-value minutes around McDavid. An Ekholm absence would put added responsibility on Bouchard and Edmonton’s remaining defenders. Matthew Savoie, Frederik Andersen and Devon Levi have also appeared on injury lists; their situations should be checked against the final roster report.
Injury status is not the same as a confirmed game-day scratch.
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: Calgary Flames 3 – Edmonton Oilers 5.
I favour Edmonton because a McDavid-Draisaitl-Bouchard attack producing this much offense is extremely difficult to contain over sixty minutes. I expect McDavid to create multiple premium chances, Draisaitl to remain a serious goal threat and Bouchard to benefit if the Oilers earn sustained power-play time.
I do not expect a comfortable night for either goalie. Calgary’s power play is strong enough to punish Edmonton penalties, and the Oilers have conceded enough chances to keep Farabee, Coronato and Gridin relevant. The projected 5-3 score is my editorial pick, not a model-derived guarantee.
What matters more than the final score? For Edmonton, I want to know who actually gets McDavid’s wing minutes if Hyman is unavailable.
Calgary Flames vs. Edmonton Oilers Odds & Scoring Outlook
As of the October 28 morning listings, Edmonton was around -220 on the moneyline, Calgary around +180, with a 6.5-goal total. The market broadly recognizes Edmonton’s advantage and a game with meaningful scoring potential. For fantasy purposes, that supports attention to top-six forwards and power-play defensemen while increasing the risk attached to goalies. It does not mean seven goals must be scored, and betting markets do not guarantee outcomes. These numbers can move before puck drop.
