With Alexandar Georgiev struggling, the Avalanche may be looking to acquire Sharks goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. Could a trade be in the works?

It’s no secret that the Colorado Avalanche have had a less-than-stellar start to the season. While their offensive firepower remains potent, questions linger about their goaltending. Alexandar Georgiev hasn’t quite lived up to expectations for the past calendar year. This has led to speculation that General Manager Chris MacFarland is exploring other options, and one name keeps popping up: Mackenzie Blackwood.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently suggested on his 32 Thoughts podcast that the Avalanche are likely looking at alternative goaltending solutions, and Blackwood seems like a logical target. The 27-year-old netminder is currently with the San Jose Sharks, a team clearly in rebuilding mode. With Blackwood set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, the Sharks have a prime opportunity to capitalize on his value and acquire assets that align with their long-term vision.

From the Avalanche’s perspective, Blackwood offers a tantalizing blend of potential and affordability. His $2.35 million cap hit fits comfortably within their current structure, and his age aligns with their competitive window. While Blackwood has faced his share of challenges in recent years, including injuries and inconsistency, he’s shown flashes of brilliance that suggest he could thrive in a more stable environment.

Rumors swirling around the league indicate that the Avalanche might be willing to send Georgiev to San Jose as part of a Blackwood deal. However, it’s unlikely the Sharks would accept a straight swap. They’ll undoubtedly demand a sweetener, such as a high draft pick or a promising prospect, to part with their goaltender.

This potential trade presents an intriguing scenario for both teams. The Avalanche would be taking a calculated risk on Blackwood, hoping a change of scenery can unlock his full potential. Meanwhile, the Sharks would be adding a goaltender in Georgiev who, despite his recent struggles, still possesses considerable upside. Plus, they’d be gaining valuable assets to further their rebuild.

Of course, it’s important to remember that this is all speculation at this point. Trade talks can be fluid, and things can change quickly. But the possibility of a Blackwood-for-Georgiev swap is certainly something to keep an eye on as the season progresses.
