The Toronto Maple Leafs reportedly spent the summer trying to move Morgan Rielly, but according to NHL insider Nick Kypreos, they encountered a problem nobody in Toronto wants to hear: there wasn’t a team interested in taking on the veteran defenseman.
Now, just weeks into the 2026-27 NHL season, Rielly’s future is becoming complicated again.
In his October 22 trade-board update for Sportsnet, Kypreos revealed that Rielly remains a potential trade candidate, especially if Toronto decides to acquire another defenseman. The 32-year-old carries a $7.5 million salary-cap hit through the 2029-30 season, and his contract is becoming a major obstacle in any potential deal.
Here’s where things get interesting.
Rielly just delivered a three-assist performance in Toronto’s 6-2 victory over Columbus. With Chris Tanev injured and concerns surrounding Jake McCabe’s health, the Maple Leafs suddenly need Rielly to play some of his best hockey.
Could the player Toronto couldn’t trade this summer become the key to its next blockbuster?
That’s the question facing general manager John Chayka.
Morgan Rielly Trade Rumors: What NHL Insider Nick Kypreos Revealed
The latest Morgan Rielly trade rumors aren’t simply another case of frustrated Maple Leafs fans wanting a struggling player moved.
There is new reporting behind the speculation.
In his October 22 edition of Real Kyper’s Trade Board, Kypreos stated that Toronto was unable to generate interest in Rielly throughout the offseason. He questioned whether the defenseman’s current production justifies his contract and suggested the Leafs might need a larger trade to facilitate his departure.
Kypreos also indicated that Rielly could be included in a deal if Toronto adds another defenseman.
The reporting does not establish that Toronto has an imminent deal, an active offer or a new trading partner. Instead, it suggests Rielly remains a player the organization could move under the right circumstances.
From my perspective, this is a particularly revealing development because Toronto is no longer dealing exclusively with a hockey decision.
It’s facing an asset-management problem.
Rielly has been part of the Maple Leafs organization since being selected fifth overall in the 2012 NHL Draft. He’s an alternate captain, a respected veteran and a player who has contributed significantly during some of Toronto’s most competitive regular seasons.
But loyalty and salary-cap efficiency aren’t always compatible.
At some point, management has to evaluate what a player can deliver today rather than what he accomplished three years ago.
Why the Toronto Maple Leafs Are Facing a Difficult Decision
Morgan Rielly still possesses qualities NHL teams value.
He can carry the puck through the neutral zone, support the rush, and make plays that generate offense from the back end.
The issue is whether those strengths justify a $7.5 million commitment.
Toronto already invested heavily in Darren Raddysh, who carries an $8.5 million cap hit. With Raddysh handling important offensive responsibilities, Rielly’s place in the lineup has changed.
For years, Rielly was one of Toronto’s primary options to drive offense from the blue line.
Now management must determine whether paying both defensemen premium salaries provides enough value elsewhere in the lineup.
I don’t believe this is about Rielly suddenly becoming a bad hockey player.
It’s about whether the Leafs can construct a stronger overall defense with their available resources.
If Toronto believes another defenseman would improve its defensive-zone coverage, physicality or ability to handle difficult matchups, Rielly’s contract becomes a logical place to examine.
That’s especially true with the team already dealing with injuries.
Toronto Maple Leafs Salary Cap: The $7.5 Million Morgan Rielly Problem
Rielly signed an eight-year, $60 million contract that began in 2022-23.
His annual cap hit remains $7.5 million, and his deal runs through 2029-30.
For the 2026-27 season, the NHL salary-cap ceiling is $104 million. That means Rielly alone accounts for approximately 7.21% of a team’s standard cap ceiling.
Here is our NHLTradeRumor.com salary-cap breakdown.
The $7.5M Morgan Rielly Contract
NHLTradeRumor.com calculations based on a $7.5M cap hit and $104M NHL salary cap. Hypothetical scenarios only, excluding incoming contracts and other roster transactions. All trades remain subject to Rielly’s no-movement clause.
Could Retaining Salary Make a Morgan Rielly Trade Possible?
Let’s examine three hypothetical scenarios using Rielly’s cap hit.
Without retained salary, an acquiring team would absorb the entire $7.5 million commitment.
If Toronto retained 25%, the acquiring team’s annual cap obligation would fall to $5.625 million.
At 50% retention, that obligation would become $3.75 million.
Those calculations are straightforward. The consequences aren’t.
Retaining half of Rielly’s salary for the remainder of his contract would leave Toronto carrying a $3.75 million annual cap charge without receiving his services.
I would be extremely hesitant to make that commitment unless the trade delivered a substantial long-term benefit.
There’s also Rielly’s no-movement clause. He would need to approve a trade, making his preferences an essential part of negotiations.
Toronto cannot simply identify a trade partner and send him elsewhere.
Has Morgan Rielly’s Trade Value Already Hit Its Lowest Point?
This is where I believe the discussion becomes more interesting than the headlines.
Rielly produced 58 points during the 2023-24 season, followed by 41 points in 2024-25 and 36 points last season.
That downward trend explains why clubs might hesitate to assume the remaining contract.
However, production doesn’t tell the entire story.
Rielly has spent much of his career contributing to Toronto’s transition game, and those skills still matter in a league that increasingly rewards defensemen capable of moving the puck under pressure.
His recent three-assist game against Columbus demonstrated that he can still contribute offensively.
I wouldn’t suddenly increase his trade valuation because of one strong performance, though.
What matters is whether he can sustain better play over the next 15 to 20 games.
Our Morgan Rielly Trade-Value Assessment
Rather than inventing a draft-pick price, I’ve evaluated five factors that influence Rielly’s potential market.
Morgan Rielly’s Production Trend
Editorial Trade-Fit Scorecard
Season totals: NHL.com/PuckPedia. Five-factor assessment is original NHLTradeRumor.com editorial analysis, not a scouting report, reported offer or predictive statistical model. Higher ratings indicate more favourable trade characteristics.
This is an editorial evaluation, not a verified league-wide trade-value calculation.
My assessment is that Rielly’s market could improve if he demonstrates he remains an effective top-four defenseman.
But without salary retention or a meaningful contract exchange, I don’t see Toronto commanding a premium return.
In fact, it’s possible the Maple Leafs would be making a trade primarily to reshape their defense rather than accumulate valuable draft picks.
That is an important difference.
Chris Tanev’s Injury Changes Everything for Toronto
The timing of these rumors creates another problem.
Chris Tanev’s absence has exposed weaknesses in Toronto’s defensive structure, while Jake McCabe’s health has become another concern.
Sportsnet analyst Justin Bourne recently identified the Maple Leafs’ defense as a significant issue and emphasized how much the team needs effective play from its veteran blue-liners.
That includes Rielly.
Moving him without obtaining a dependable replacement could leave Toronto even more vulnerable defensively.
General manager John Chayka has to consider whether the organization can afford to lose an experienced defenseman while already searching for reinforcements.
My preference would be to evaluate Rielly’s performance over a more meaningful stretch before committing to a major trade.
The Maple Leafs have already made substantial roster changes, including their blockbuster acquisition of Kirill Marchenko.
Making another significant move purely because of a difficult opening month could be counterproductive.
At the same time, waiting too long risks missing opportunities when another club becomes willing to negotiate.
That’s the balancing act.
Which NHL Teams Could Realistically Trade for Morgan Rielly?
Several organizations could benefit from another puck-moving defenseman, but identifying a theoretical fit is different from confirming genuine trade interest.
Earlier offseason speculation connected Rielly to Western Conference possibilities such as the Anaheim Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Seattle Kraken and Los Angeles Kings.
Those connections shouldn’t be interpreted as confirmed October trade negotiations.
From a hockey perspective, I would look for three characteristics in any potential destination.
First, the team needs room for an experienced left-shot defenseman who can contribute offensively.
Second, it must possess enough financial flexibility to absorb the contract, potentially with another player heading to Toronto.
Finally, the destination must be acceptable to Rielly.
That third requirement might be the most important.
A contender looking for immediate defensive help could theoretically make sense, but a rebuilding team might hesitate to commit significant cap space to a 32-year-old defenseman.
For that reason, a traditional player-for-prospects transaction appears less convincing than a larger hockey trade involving contracts moving in both directions.
There is no confirmed package or destination at this time.
Why Morgan Rielly’s Next 20 Games Could Decide His Future
Rielly’s immediate priority should be playing effective hockey, not worrying about trade speculation.
The Leafs have enough defensive uncertainty without one of their most experienced players struggling to find his game.
The encouraging part is that Toronto recently recorded consecutive victories over San Jose and Columbus.
Against the Blue Jackets, Rielly collected three assists and helped generate offense during a convincing win.
Those performances matter because they can challenge the perception that his decline is irreversible.
Still, two encouraging games shouldn’t erase the larger sample.
The critical questions are whether Rielly can drive successful breakouts, limit defensive breakdowns and remain effective when opponents apply pressure.
If those areas improve, his value to Toronto rises.
His value to another organization might rise as well.
That creates an unusual situation: the better Rielly plays, the harder it might become for Toronto to justify keeping him on the trade market.
But it could also finally create the opportunity management couldn’t find during the offseason.
Will the Toronto Maple Leafs Actually Trade Morgan Rielly?
My feeling is that Toronto shouldn’t move Morgan Rielly simply because the organization explored doing so during the summer.
The team needs to make a decision based on fit, future performance and the financial implications of any proposed deal.
If Chayka can acquire a more dependable top-four defenseman in a transaction involving Rielly, the conversation becomes considerably more compelling.
But trading him while retaining substantial salary, surrendering additional assets and failing to improve the defense would accomplish very little.
That’s why I believe this situation deserves attention throughout the opening months of the season.
The most important new detail isn’t that Rielly has appeared on another trade board.
It’s that an established NHL insider reports the Maple Leafs were unable to find a market for him, and Toronto may now need to make him part of something bigger.
For a franchise trying to return to the playoffs, that could become one of the most consequential roster decisions of the season.
