The Edmonton Oilers were the only serious team to inquire about a trade for San Jose Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson, but for NHL salary cap reasons a trade could not be figured out before the NHL trade deadline.
If The Oilers are indeed the landing choice for Erik Karlsson, that means goalie Jack Campbell will have to be part of a package going back to San Jose.
San Jose Sharks will trade for Jack Campbell
With Stuart Skinner taking over the starting goalie roll for the Edmonton Oilers Eric Duhatschek of The Athletic reports that the Oilers must move out Campbell’s contract in the offseason to complete a Karlsson trade.
Duhatschek went on to say in his piece that the Sharks will be needing a goalie as James Reimer will not be back and with Kaapo Kahkonen signed for one more year he could be the backup or split games with Campbell.
The Sharks will be able to take on all of Campbell’s contract along with eating about $2 million of Erik Karlsson’s contract with the Oilers sending over young assets like Phillip Broberg and Xavier Bourgau in a trade for Karlsson.
