Connor McDavid has 37 points in 14 games, but the biggest fantasy hockey storyline heading into Sunday’s Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers matchup might be the goaltending situation at Madison Square Garden.
Edmonton arrives in New York riding consecutive shutouts and a perfect 6-0-0 road record. McDavid has recorded a point in every game this season, while Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard have helped make the Oilers one of the NHL’s most dangerous offensive teams.
The Rangers present a fascinating counterargument. Adam Fox has 17 points, Alexis Lafrenière has nine goals, and New York owns an impressive 90.5% penalty kill. However, Igor Shesterkin’s injury has changed the outlook in net, creating an opportunity for Edmonton’s elite scorers.
What I’m watching: Can Edmonton’s power play overcome New York’s penalty kill, and will the Oilers maintain their offensive pace playing their second game in as many days?
My early fantasy advantage belongs to McDavid, Draisaitl and Bouchard, but New York’s offensive stars have enough upside to make this a surprisingly entertaining matchup.

Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
Edmonton is 10-2-2 with 22 standings points, 60 goals scored and 43 allowed through 14 games: 4.29 goals for and 3.07 against per game. New York is 7-6-1 with 15 points, 44 goals for and 42 against, or 3.14 for and 3.00 against per game. The Oilers’ 33.3% power play is a major source of their fantasy ceiling, but their 74.4% penalty kill also gives Rangers attackers openings.
The counterweight is New York’s 90.5% penalty kill. More interesting still, the Rangers are 6-1-0 at home and Edmonton is 6-0-0 away. In 2025–26, Edmonton won 2-0 at the Garden on October 14 before New York won 4-3 in overtime on October 30. I see no compelling reason to call either club’s home/road split a guarantee.

NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Oilers vs. Rangers
McDavid is the safest offensive anchor. His 37 points include 29 assists, and the projected top line pairs him with Draisaitl and Vasily Podkolzin. Draisaitl’s 12 goals supply the finishing threat; Bouchard, already at 23 points, offers unusually high offensive upside for a defenseman. Their established first-power-play involvement matters, although the Rangers’ penalty kill makes five-on-five opportunities especially important.
On the other side, I like Adam Fox as New York’s best all-around fantasy play. His 16 assists make him the main creator from the blue line. Lafrenière has nine goals and is projected beside Mika Zibanejad and Pavel Dorofeyev; that combination could test Edmonton’s weaker penalty kill. Rookie Gabe Perreault is worth monitoring alongside Noah Laba and Will Cuylle, but I would avoid assuming premium power-play minutes for him.
Goaltending changes the risk calculation. Matt Tomkins is expected, not officially confirmed, to start for Edmonton after Tristan Jarry’s shutout Saturday. Dylan Garand is projected for New York while Shesterkin and Joonas Korpisalo remain out. Monitor both clubs’ final confirmations.
NHLTradeRumor.com Fantasy Matchup Projection
These are my expected point ranges, not daily fantasy salary values. I put McDavid alone in the 1–3-point tier because his involvement across even-strength and power-play offense remains exceptional.
These projections assume the player dresses and receives meaningful minutes. Point ranges are my matchup forecasts, not guarantees or confirmed line assignments.
Top Five Oilers and Rangers Fantasy Scorers This Season
McDavid’s 37 points set Edmonton’s index baseline; New York’s baseline is Fox’s 17. A 60% bar means 60% of that club’s current leader’s production, not a 60% chance to score tonight. That distinction matters when comparing a top-heavy Edmonton offense with a Rangers roster spreading points across several players.
For perspective, Edmonton’s 2025–26 top five were McDavid (48 G, 90 A, 138 P), Draisaitl (35-62-97), Bouchard (21-74-95), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (20-36-56) and Zach Hyman (31-21-52). New York’s prior leaders were Zibanejad (34-44-78), Lafrenière (24-33-57), Artemi Panarin (19-38-57), J.T. Miller (17-36-53) and Vincent Trocheck (16-37-53); Adam Fox also tied at 53 points. Those are last season’s totals, not the figures charted below.
*Edmonton’s fifth position is tied at seven points with Kasperi Kapanen and Mathieu Joseph; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is shown as one representative. New York’s fourth and fifth scorers are tied at ten points.

Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Edmonton is without Zach Hyman (neck) and lists Isaac Howard (knee) after Howard exited Saturday’s game. Matt Savoie, Frederik Andersen, Devon Levi, Mattias Janmark and Alec Regula are also listed among the injured. Howard’s status could open a bottom-six slot for Filip Hållander; Hyman’s absence helps sustain extra opportunity for Podkolzin and other wingers. Neither change automatically puts a replacement on PP1.
For New York, Shesterkin and Korpisalo are sidelined, making Garand’s potential workload a consequential fantasy question. Joseph Veleno is also out. Sean Durzi and Braden Schneider missed Saturday practice and were described as day-to-day; if either sits, defensive pairings and Fox’s workload could shift. Scratches are not injuries: the projected scratches include Matt Rempe. Check the final lineup before activating fringe players.
Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers Salary-Cap Snapshot
PuckPedia lists Edmonton with a projected $103.87 million cap hit and approximately $130,000 projected space against the $104 million ceiling. New York’s projected $104.62 million hit translates to approximately negative $617,000 projected space, but PuckPedia separately reports current space under its LTIR accounting. These figures help explain why seemingly small recalls or waiver moves can affect fantasy opportunity; they do not predict tonight’s final score.
Cap utilization is projected cap hit ÷ $104 million league ceiling. Rangers’ projected overage is a projection metric, not proof of an illegal roster; PuckPedia separately shows $4.42M of current cap space and an LTIR pool. Projected and current measures are not interchangeable. Values change with transactions.
Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers Fantasy Hockey Prediction
My score prediction: Edmonton Oilers 4 – New York Rangers 3. I give Edmonton the narrow edge because McDavid’s line can produce without needing multiple power plays, and Bouchard adds another dangerous offensive layer. But this is the second night of a back-to-back, and Tomkins is the expected starter rather than the goalie responsible for the recent shutouts. I would not treat a low New York score as inevitable.
The Rangers have a legitimate counter: a strong home record, Lafrenière’s finishing and Fox’s playmaking against an Edmonton penalty kill at 74.4%. Their elite 90.5% penalty kill can also contain the Oilers’ special-teams advantage. The last two meetings were a 2-0 Edmonton win and 4-3 Rangers overtime victory, so I expect a competitive game rather than an automatic Edmonton rout.
My fantasy takeaway: The development that matters more than the result is the final goaltender announcement and whether Fox, Zibanejad and Lafrenière get sustained first-unit power-play time. That deployment will shape the Rangers’ upside for the next several games, not just tonight.
Edmonton Oilers vs. New York Rangers Odds & Scoring Outlook
A published October 31 market snapshot placed Edmonton around +105, New York around -125, with a game total of 6.5 goals. From a fantasy perspective, that total suggests meaningful offensive potential for both top-six groups, but it does not resolve the uncertainty around the goalies. The slightly favoured home team contrasts with my narrow Edmonton score pick, which reflects the Oilers’ top-end production rather than a betting recommendation. Markets move and do not guarantee outcomes.
