The Dylan Larkin trade rumors may have reached their most revealing stage yet, and the biggest development isn’t another team suddenly entering the bidding.
It’s the growing indication that the Detroit Red Wings simply don’t have to trade him right now.
NHL insider Chris Johnston has continued to identify Minnesota as perhaps the most logical eventual landing spot for Larkin, but his latest discussion of the situation exposed the bigger problem: Detroit needs a return that can help the Red Wings now, not just a collection of futures.
That distinction could explain why a blockbuster has been so difficult to complete.
Larkin requested a trade following another disappointing Detroit season, has since lost the captaincy and entered training camp with his future unresolved. Yet he remains under contract for five more seasons at an $8.7 million annual cap hit and possesses significant control over his destination through his no-trade protection.
Put everything together and Detroit’s position becomes much easier to understand.
The Red Wings aren’t negotiating from desperation. They’re negotiating from leverage.
Why the Detroit Red Wings Can Afford to Wait on Dylan Larkin
The most important part of the latest Larkin discussion may be what Detroit wants in return.
Johnston has indicated the Red Wings need a player capable of helping them immediately if they’re going to move their longtime No. 1 center.
That makes sense when you consider the direction interim general manager Shawn Horcoff has publicly established.
Horcoff has made it clear another rebuild isn’t what Detroit intends to do. The organization believes its roster is close enough to compete for a playoff spot and is trying to finally end a postseason drought that has reached 10 consecutive seasons.
Trading Larkin primarily for draft picks and prospects would therefore create an obvious problem.
Detroit might accumulate attractive long-term assets, but it would also remove its most established center from a team that says it wants to win now.
That is where these negotiations become much more complicated than simply determining Larkin’s market value.
That last point matters.
From my perspective, Larkin’s contract isn’t the problem holding up a trade. Detroit’s roster construction is.
The Red Wings already have enough cap flexibility that moving Larkin simply to create another $8.7 million in room accomplishes very little. The return has to make Detroit better, or at minimum give management a believable path toward replacing what Larkin provides.
Chris Johnston’s Update Reveals the Biggest Dylan Larkin Trade Obstacle
Johnston previously said he would expect Larkin to still be wearing a Detroit jersey on January 1 while continuing to describe Minnesota as the most likely destination if a trade eventually happens.
Those two ideas aren’t contradictory.
Minnesota can be the best theoretical fit while still lacking the exact piece Detroit wants.
That’s probably the most important distinction for fans following these Dylan Larkin trade rumors.
There is a massive difference between a team wanting Larkin and that team possessing an NHL-ready player Detroit values enough to move him.
The Red Wings don’t appear interested in treating this like a traditional rebuild trade where the goal is to maximize draft capital.
They need replacement value.
My biggest takeaway is that Larkin’s trade protection may actually matter more than his contract value.
If Detroit could negotiate with 31 teams, management could create a bidding environment and search for precisely the NHL-ready piece it wants.
A limited market changes the equation.
Interested teams know Detroit’s options are restricted. Detroit knows it cannot simply accept a futures-heavy package without weakening the roster. Larkin knows the Red Wings cannot send him somewhere he doesn’t want to go.
That’s how a trade request turns into a stalemate.
Dylan Larkin’s Production Gives Detroit Another Reason to Hold Firm
There’s also a hockey reason Detroit shouldn’t rush this.
Larkin continues to produce like a legitimate top-six NHL center.
He scored 33 goals and 69 points in only 68 games in 2023-24, followed that with 30 goals and 70 points in 82 games in 2024-25, then recorded 34 goals and 67 points over 74 games last season.
That is not declining production.
In fact, Larkin averaged more than a point per game in 2023-24 and still produced at roughly a 74-point pace over 82 games last season.
For Detroit, that production establishes a simple baseline.
If you’re going to trade Larkin, who replaces those minutes, goals and center responsibilities?
A prospect might eventually do it. A first-round pick could someday become a better player. But neither helps a Red Wings team that says it’s trying to win now.
That is why I believe Detroit’s asking price should remain high even with the trade request hanging over the organization.
Has Chris Johnston’s Earlier Dylan Larkin Reporting Held Up?
So far, yes.
Earlier in the offseason, Johnston suggested Larkin could still be a member of the Detroit Red Wings when training camp arrived.
That’s exactly what happened.
Larkin reported, addressed his teammates and publicly acknowledged that asking for a trade while serving as captain came with consequences. He has also said he intends to remain professional while the situation plays out.
An upper-body injury suffered during off-ice training has temporarily prevented him from fully participating, although Detroit has said its immediate focus is getting him healthy.
That doesn’t mean a trade cannot happen quickly if the right offer suddenly appears.
It means there is little evidence Detroit feels compelled to manufacture a trade simply because the request remains unresolved.
And that may be the real message behind Johnston’s latest comments.
The blockbuster isn’t necessarily dead.
The Red Wings are simply waiting for somebody to give them a reason to make it.
Until an interested team is willing to surrender an NHL player capable of helping Detroit immediately, and until Larkin is willing to approve that destination, this may remain one of the NHL’s biggest unresolved trade stories.
