The Dylan Larkin trade rumors have taken another significant turn, and the biggest development might not have anything to do with a new offer from the Minnesota Wild.
It is the change occurring inside the Detroit Red Wings front office.
Shawn Horcoff is now Detroit’s interim general manager, replacing Steve Yzerman as the person overseeing roster decisions, and that matters because the parameters around a potential Larkin trade could effectively be reset. Horcoff has authority over roster decisions, salary-cap management and hockey operations while Detroit searches for its permanent hockey leader.
Meanwhile, Larkin finally addressed his offseason trade request publicly at Red Wings training camp. He confirmed that asking out had consequences, acknowledged losing the captaincy and said he intends to handle the situation professionally. What he did not do was clearly say the trade request had been withdrawn. NHL.com reported that Larkin left his future unresolved.
That combination is what makes Minnesota worth watching again.
The Wild have been consistently connected to Larkin, and recent reporting indicates Minnesota remains the team showing the strongest desire to make a deal. If Horcoff views Detroit’s return differently than Yzerman did, the stalemate may finally have a path forward.
Why Shawn Horcoff Changes the Dylan Larkin Trade Equation
The important distinction here is that a change in general manager does not automatically mean Larkin will be traded.
Detroit owner Chris Ilitch has already acknowledged that Larkin could remain with the Red Wings for the entire season.
But negotiations are rarely completely independent of the person running them.
The previous Detroit position appeared straightforward: moving a legitimate No. 1 centre signed long term required the Red Wings to receive significant NHL value in return. Minnesota’s problem is that much of what it can comfortably offer comes in the form of prospects and future assets.
Danila Yurov and Charlie Stramel have repeatedly surfaced around the speculation. Earlier reporting also identified a potential package involving young players and draft capital as the type of return Minnesota could construct.
My read is that this remains the central obstacle.
Detroit does not need to trade Larkin merely to create cap room. The Red Wings currently project to have roughly $19.57 million in 2026-27 cap space. That gives Horcoff considerable flexibility without sacrificing his top centre.
Minnesota therefore cannot approach Detroit as though the Red Wings are a distressed seller.
The leverage is complicated, however, by Larkin’s trade protection and previously reported short list of destinations. A smaller market of acceptable teams naturally reduces Detroit’s negotiating options. NHL.com previously reported that Larkin gave management a short list of teams he would consider waiving his no-trade clause to join.
That is where Minnesota continues to matter.

Larkin’s production helps explain why Detroit can afford to be patient.
He scored 33 goals and 69 points in 68 games in 2023-24, followed by 30 goals and 70 points over a full 82-game schedule in 2024-25. Last season, he reached a career-high 34 goals while producing 67 points in 74 games.
That is not the profile of a player a team dumps because a relationship has become uncomfortable.
It is the profile of a valuable top-six centre whom Detroit should move only if the return advances the organization.
What a Dylan Larkin Trade to the Minnesota Wild Would Actually Require
The salary cap is where the Minnesota Wild trade scenario becomes much more complicated.
Larkin carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit through the 2030-31 season. His contract contains a full no-trade clause for 2026-27 and 2027-28 before converting to modified trade protection later in the deal.
Minnesota currently projects to have only about $1.15 million in cap space against the $104 million ceiling.
In other words, Minnesota cannot simply send Detroit prospects and picks and absorb Larkin.
That cap calculation is one reason I would not expect a simple Larkin-for-prospects transaction.
Minnesota needs the hockey assets to satisfy Detroit and a salary structure that makes the deal legal.
The Wild’s interest makes sense from a roster perspective. Larkin brings speed through the middle, a consistent 30-goal threat and experience in every situation. Putting that type of centre into a lineup featuring high-end talent such as Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy and Quinn Hughes would give Minnesota another dimension offensively.
But wanting the player and constructing a workable trade are two very different things.

The biggest issue in my trade-value model is not Larkin’s ability.
It is leverage.
If Minnesota truly is the club pushing hardest while other destinations are not actively negotiating, Detroit cannot manufacture a bidding war that does not exist.
That does not mean Horcoff should lower the price dramatically. With five years remaining on Larkin’s contract, Detroit has the ability to wait.
But the new general manager may define an acceptable return differently.
That is the real reason the Dylan Larkin trade rumors deserve another look.
The situation has moved from Steve Yzerman managing a dissatisfied captain to Shawn Horcoff determining whether the relationship can be repaired, or whether a Minnesota package built around youth, futures and necessary salary movement gives the Detroit Red Wings a better path forward.
Larkin has not publicly closed the door on Detroit. Detroit has not said it must trade him. Minnesota has not been reported to have completed an acceptable offer.
But the person making the decision has changed.
Sometimes that is all a stalled NHL trade negotiation needs to start moving again.
