A new November 2 report has named Auston Matthews as one of three NHL superstars Nikita Kucherov reportedly wants to play alongside, creating a fresh Toronto Maple Leafs angle in the Tampa Bay Lightning winger’s uncertain future. Daria Tuboltseva of RG.org attributed the information to an anonymous NHL source.
According to RG.org’s report, Kucherov would like to join Matthews, Connor McDavid or David Pastrnak. The source also suggested Toronto could become a realistic destination through unrestricted free agency in July 2027, rather than through an immediate trade.
That distinction matters. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported October 31 that the Maple Leafs and Montreal Canadiens were among the destinations Kucherov would consider. However, neither team has been confirmed as an active trade partner.
The Lightning have also made their position clear: general manager Julien BriseBois says the organization has no intention of trading its superstar.
For Toronto, the newest reporting raises an intriguing possibility. But signing Kucherov could require a significant restructuring of the roster and its future salary commitments.
Latest Nikita Kucherov Trade Rumors: What Changed on November 2?
The latest development adds specific names to speculation about what Kucherov wants from the next stage of his career.
ESPN’s Emily Kaplan previously reported that the 33-year-old was interested in playing with another top NHL superstar. Monday’s RG.org report identified Matthews, McDavid and Pastrnak as those players, according to its anonymous source.
The source described Toronto as a plausible destination once Kucherov’s current contract expires.
That is a meaningful difference from Friedman’s October 31 update. Friedman identified the Maple Leafs and Canadiens as teams Kucherov might consider in a trade scenario. The new report raises the separate possibility that he could wait until free agency and choose his next destination without requiring a trade between Atlantic Division rivals.
There are important limitations to the reporting. Kucherov has not publicly confirmed the three-player preference, and no agreement or negotiation between his representatives and Toronto has been established.
The Maple Leafs could be a team to watch without necessarily being the team most likely to acquire him.
Why the Maple Leafs Face a Difficult Salary-Cap Decision
Kucherov’s appeal is obvious. He produced 44 goals and 130 points in 76 games last season, winning another Hart Trophy. Through 13 games in 2026–27, he has four goals and 18 points.
Toronto would be acquiring one of the league’s most accomplished offensive creators, not simply another top-six winger.
The problem is what his next contract might cost.
According to previous reporting from Chris Johnston, Kucherov was seeking approximately six years at $20 million annually. David Pagnotta subsequently reported chatter about a four-year Lightning offer worth approximately $15 million per season. Neither figure should be treated as a confirmed proposal from Toronto.
The NHL’s salary cap is $104 million this season and projected to reach $113.5 million in 2027–28.
However, the larger league-wide ceiling does not automatically give Toronto enough room.
PuckPedia’s November 2 salary-cap projections show the Leafs with approximately $2.40 million in projected space for 2027–28 under their current commitments.
Matthews carries a $13.25 million cap hit through that season. William Nylander counts for another $11.5 million, and Toronto has significant money committed throughout its roster.
Even at an illustrative $15 million annual salary, the Leafs would need approximately $12.6 million in additional room relative to that projection.
At $20 million, the gap would rise to approximately $17.6 million.
This is not an impossible challenge, but it would require more than a routine depth move.
NHLTR Salary-Cap Reality Check: Could Toronto Afford Kucherov?
The Kucherov Salary-Cap Reality Check
What Toronto would need to clear for a potential July 2027 free-agent signing.
Methodology: Each illustrated annual salary is compared with Toronto’s projected $2,397,618 in 2027-28 cap space. Calculations assume unchanged existing commitments and do not model trades, signings, bonuses or further roster changes. Figures are rounded to $0.1M. These are NOT Maple Leafs contract offers or probabilities. The $15M figure resembles a reported Tampa Bay proposal; $20M reflects a reported negotiating target. Snapshot: November 2, 2026. Sources: PuckPedia, NHL/NHLPA. All amounts USD.
The figures also reveal why waiting until free agency is not necessarily an easy solution.
Toronto would avoid paying Tampa Bay prospects, draft picks or roster players in a trade. However, the club would still need to create substantial cap space, potentially through trades, expiring commitments or other roster changes.
There is an additional complication this season. Toronto’s limited 2027–28 tagging room restricts its ability to add certain contracts containing future-year commitments before the next league year. That creates another obstacle to acquiring Kucherov now without corresponding transactions.
Why Auston Matthews Makes Toronto an Interesting Hockey Fit
Setting the finances aside, a Kucherov–Matthews combination would be fascinating.
Matthews is an elite goal scorer who thrives when he receives the puck in dangerous areas. Kucherov specializes in manipulating defensive coverage, delaying plays and finding teammates through passing lanes that appear closed.
Their strengths could complement each other particularly well on the power play.
Kucherov often operates from the right side of the offensive zone as a left-handed playmaker. His ability to distribute through traffic could give Toronto another way to create high-quality chances for Matthews.
There would also be an opportunity to build a dangerous first-line combination at even strength.
The complication is William Nylander.
Toronto already possesses a high-end right winger capable of carrying offensive responsibility. Adding Kucherov would improve the team’s skill ceiling, but management would have to decide how to distribute ice time, power-play touches and salary commitments among its stars.
NHLTradeRumor.com analysis: Kucherov’s fit beside Matthews makes sense from an offensive standpoint. The harder question is whether concentrating that much payroll in a small group of forwards would leave enough flexibility to maintain a championship-calibre defence, goaltending and supporting cast.
That is where an exciting hypothetical pairing becomes a difficult management decision.
Trading for Kucherov Now Versus Waiting Until July 2027
There are two distinct paths worth examining.
Scenario 1: Toronto Pursues a Trade
Kucherov’s existing contract carries a $9.5 million cap hit and includes a modified no-trade provision allowing him to identify 10 acceptable destinations.
Friedman has connected Toronto to the list of teams Kucherov could consider, but the actual approved list remains undisclosed.
A trade would require agreement from Tampa Bay, which has publicly opposed moving him. It would also require Toronto to manage its current cap and future-contract constraints.
Any potential trade package involving NHL players, prospects or draft picks remains hypothetical. There is no verified offer from Toronto.
The Leafs would also need to consider whether paying substantial assets for Kucherov makes sense without an extension.
Scenario 2: Toronto Targets Kucherov in Free Agency
If Kucherov completes his contract without signing an extension, he could enter unrestricted free agency on July 1, 2027.
Toronto would then have the opportunity to pursue him without compensating the Lightning through a trade.
That sounds attractive, especially for an organization that must carefully manage its available draft capital and future roster flexibility.
But Kucherov would also be 34 when a new contract begins. A six-year commitment at a salary approaching $20 million would carry considerable long-term risk, even for a player with his extraordinary offensive record.
Toronto could decide that a shorter contract at a substantial annual value makes more sense. Whether Kucherov would accept those terms is entirely unknown.
Why Tampa Bay Still Controls the Immediate Situation
The Lightning have more leverage than some of the speculation might suggest.
Kucherov remains under contract, continues playing and is central to Tampa Bay’s attempts to compete for another Stanley Cup.
He also recently became the franchise’s all-time leading scorer, surpassing Steven Stamkos. That achievement underscores the difficulty of replacing his production and importance to the organization.
BriseBois has publicly rejected the prospect of a trade, while reporting indicates Kucherov intends to continue playing during the dispute.
For Tampa Bay, keeping him preserves its strongest offensive weapon for the remainder of the season.
The risk is that Kucherov could eventually reach free agency without an extension, leaving the Lightning facing the possibility of losing an elite asset without receiving a trade return.
My assessment: Tampa Bay’s competitive ambitions are the strongest argument against moving Kucherov immediately. Unless the organization’s position changes, speculation about Toronto should remain focused primarily on future scenarios rather than an imminent transaction.
What Happens Next for Kucherov and the Maple Leafs?
There are three developments that will determine whether this becomes something more substantial.
First, watch whether Kucherov or his representatives publicly clarify his preferred destinations. The reported interest in joining Matthews is intriguing, but it remains unconfirmed.
Second, monitor Tampa Bay’s approach to contract negotiations. A significant change in BriseBois’s position would be a more meaningful trade signal than another speculative destination report.
Third, watch Toronto’s salary commitments. If management begins creating meaningful room for 2027–28, that could make a future pursuit more financially plausible. However, those moves alone would not prove a Kucherov connection.
For now, Matthews provides a compelling reason to discuss Toronto as a potential destination.
The Maple Leafs’ financial reality is the reason a deal remains far from straightforward.
Final Take: Toronto’s Opportunity Has a Price
The latest Nikita Kucherov report offers more than another entry on a growing list of possible destinations. It identifies Auston Matthews as a player the Lightning superstar reportedly wants alongside him and introduces a possible free-agency path.
The hockey fit is persuasive. The salary-cap outlook is considerably less comfortable.
Toronto would have to decide whether adding another extraordinary offensive talent is worth restructuring a roster already carrying major long-term commitments.
Until there is direct evidence of negotiations, Kucherov-to-Toronto remains a possibility worth examining—not a transaction approaching completion.
