The Minnesota Wild’s interest in Dylan Larkin makes perfect hockey sense. The difficult part is constructing a trade package that would make Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman willing to move his captain.
Recent reports indicate Minnesota remains one of Larkin’s preferred destinations, with Wild general manager Bill Guerin continuing to pursue the 29-year-old centre. Larkin is coming off a career-high 34-goal season, recorded 67 points in 74 games and carries an $8.7 million cap hit through the 2030-31 season. He would immediately become the dynamic, two-way, top-six centre Minnesota has been searching for.
The problem is not Larkin’s willingness to play in Minnesota. It is the Wild’s depleted collection of premium trade assets after several aggressive moves. Minnesota has already surrendered Marco Rossi, Liam Öhgren, Zeev Buium and its 2026 first-round pick to acquire Quinn Hughes. That blockbuster improved the Wild, but it also removed several of the exact pieces Detroit would probably request in a Larkin negotiation.

Why the Minnesota Wild May Not Have Enough Trade Assets
The Detroit Red Wings are under no obligation to accept a futures-heavy offer simply because Larkin has reportedly requested a trade.
Larkin remains Detroit’s captain, No. 1 centre and one of its most important offensive players. He also has five seasons remaining on a contract that should age reasonably well if he continues producing at a top-line level. While his full no-trade clause limits Yzerman’s market, it does not require Detroit to move him immediately.
That gives the Red Wings leverage.
If Minnesota offers only future first-round picks and secondary prospects, Yzerman can wait. The Wild still control their 2027 and 2028 first-round selections, but those picks could land late in the opening round if Larkin joins a roster featuring Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, Quinn Hughes and Brock Faber.
Detroit would likely want at least one asset with a realistic chance of becoming an impact NHL player. That could require Minnesota to discuss one of its remaining premium young pieces, such as Danila Yurov or Jesper Wallstedt. There is no public confirmation that either player has been offered, but it is difficult to see how the Wild win the bidding without including that level of value.
Minnesota has also spent other important draft capital in recent seasons. The Wild traded a 2025 first-round pick, 2026 third- and fourth-round selections and a 2027 second-rounder in the original David Jiříček deal. Jiříček was subsequently moved to Philadelphia for Bobby Brink.
Bill Guerin has been aggressive, but every major acquisition has reduced the number of high-end pieces he can place into the next trade.
An Original Dylan Larkin Trade-Value Model
Using a five-category model based on production, positional value, contract control, age and trade protection, I would assign Larkin an estimated trade value of 84 out of 100.
This is an illustrative editorial model rather than information obtained from either team:
- Two future first-round picks: approximately 34 points of value
- One premium young player or prospect: approximately 32–38 points
- A useful NHL roster player or additional prospect: approximately 10–15 points
- Conditional pick protection or another secondary asset: approximately 5 points
Under that model, an offer consisting of two first-round picks and mid-level prospects would fall well short. Minnesota would need to include a premium young player to bring the package into Detroit’s expected value range.
My proposed framework would be a 2027 first-round pick, a conditional 2028 first-round pick, one premium young asset and an NHL contract needed to balance the salary cap. Even then, Yzerman could demand more because legitimate top-line centres rarely become available with five years of contract control.
The Salary-Cap Math Creates Another Minnesota Wild Problem
Minnesota currently projects to have approximately $9.42 million in 2026-27 salary-cap space with 19 players on its active roster.
Subtracting Larkin’s $8.7 million cap hit would leave approximately $719,168 in projected space. That is less than the NHL’s $850,000 minimum salary for the 2026-27 season.
The Wild could technically make the trade work by sending salary to Detroit or another team, but they cannot comfortably absorb Larkin without a corresponding contract leaving the roster. Guerin would also want enough flexibility for injuries, call-ups and additional offseason moves.
A third team could help construct the trade, especially if Detroit prefers an asset owned by another organization. Minnesota could send picks or prospects to the third club, which would then redirect a player or higher-value asset to Detroit.
However, a third team does not magically create trade value. It would charge Minnesota for participating, making an already expensive deal even more costly. Long-term salary retention would also be difficult because Larkin has five seasons remaining.
Would the Detroit Red Wings Trade Dylan Larkin to Minnesota?
My read is that the Wild are a logical destination but not currently the easiest trade partner for Detroit.
Minnesota can offer future first-round picks, but its most valuable recent trade assets were spent acquiring Hughes. Unless Guerin is prepared to move Yurov, Wallstedt or another player Detroit views as a future core piece, Yzerman can continue waiting for Larkin to expand his list of acceptable teams.
The strongest factor working in Minnesota’s favour is Larkin’s reported interest in joining the Wild. A no-trade clause gives the player meaningful control, and Detroit may eventually need to choose between accepting Minnesota’s best offer or carrying an unhappy captain into another season.
Still, Yzerman will not want a discounted return attached to one of the most significant trades of his tenure. Guerin may be calling regularly, but eventually he must place an asset on the table that Detroit cannot easily replace.
