The Calgary Flames were frequently mentioned in NHL trade rumors during the offseason, specifically regarding Noah Hanifin, Mikael Backlund, and Elias Lindholm, but ultimately nothing came of these rumors.
The latest round of rumors have the Calgary Flames interested in Colorado Avalanche defenseman Samuel Girard.
Will the Calgary Flames make a trade for Samuel Girard?
Elliotte Friedman recently stated in his 32 Thoughts podcast that the Colorado Avalanche contacted the Calgary Flames about center Mikael Backlund in the summer.
The Avalanche decided to target Ryan Johansen in a trade with the Nashville Predators. This does not mean they do not have an interest in Backlund anymore.
NHL trade rumors are making the rounds that a blockbuster trade could be in the works between the two teams.
The Avs have defenseman Devon Toews to sign next offseason and no salary cap space. This leaves Samuel Girard as the odd man out and linked to the Calgary Flames.
The proposed trade:
To Colorado Avalanche :
C – Mikael Backlund ( $5.35 million with being a UFA in the summer of 2024 )
G – Daniel Vladar ( $2.20 million with two years left on his contract )
3rd Round Pick in 2025
To Calgary Flames :
LD – Samuel Girard ( $5 million with 4 years left on his contract. )
W – Logan O’Connor ( $1.05 million with two years left on his contract )
The above trade makes sense for both teams, as the Avalanche are seeking a depth center and a backup goalie. The Flames will need to replace Noah Hanifin at some point, and a trade for Girard makes sense for Calgary.
go for huberdeau i liked zadorov , for girard and someone else extra and for defence try bring carlo from the bruins home to colorado get rid of johnston
Let’s get this trade happening!
The cost for those two coming in is a huge overpay IMHO
This makes no sense for the Flames at all. Besides being an overpay for Girard Calgary doesn’t need or want a top 4 replacement for Hanifin. They want a scoring forward preferably a right shot.
