The Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings matchup on October 4, 2026 has an unusually important fantasy hockey angle for the second game of the season: both teams are already being forced to redistribute premium minutes.
Winnipeg enters at 0-0-1 after a 4-3 overtime loss to Boston, while Detroit is 0-1-0 after being shut out 2-0 by the New York Rangers. But the records aren’t the story I care about most. Connor Hellebuyck remains suspended by Winnipeg, while Dylan Larkin and Marco Kasper are unavailable for Detroit. Those absences change the fantasy equation at center, on special teams and, especially for Winnipeg, in goal.
My biggest player to watch is Kyle Connor. He scored in Winnipeg’s opener, generated nine shots on goal and 14 shot attempts, and now faces a Detroit team against which he has produced 16 career points in 16 games. Mark Scheifele, Cole Perfetti and Josh Morrissey also carry strong fantasy appeal, while Detroit needs Alex DeBrincat, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider to create more offense without Larkin.
For me, the biggest question is whether Detroit’s reshuffled top six can generate enough offense before Winnipeg’s elite scorers take control.

Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Hockey Matchup Outlook
Last season’s numbers help explain why I don’t view this as a simple high-scoring matchup. Winnipeg finished 35-35-12 with 82 points, scoring 229 goals while allowing 256. The Jets averaged 2.79 goals per game, generated an 18.50% power play and killed 77.63% of opposing advantages. Detroit finished 41-31-10 with 92 points, scoring 239 and allowing 254, with 2.91 goals per game, a noticeably better 22.58% power play and a 77.14% penalty kill.
Winnipeg Jets
Detroit Red Wings
Detroit also swept the two-game season series last year, winning 2-1 at Little Caesars Arena and 5-1 in Winnipeg. That matters, but I’m cautious about treating it as predictive because today’s rosters and availability are substantially different.
NHL Fantasy Players to Watch in Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings
Winnipeg’s projected top line of Connor-Scheifele-Perfetti immediately gets my attention. Connor is coming off a nine-shot opener, while Scheifele led Winnipeg with 103 points last season. Perfetti’s top-line deployment creates substantially more fantasy upside than his 32-point 2025-26 total might suggest. Winnipeg’s first power-play group in the opener featured Connor, Scheifele, Perfetti, Gabriel Vilardi and Josh Morrissey, giving all five premium scoring exposure.
Detroit is expected to counter with DeBrincat-Andrew Copp-Raymond. DeBrincat scored 41 goals last season and Raymond produced 76 points, so there’s still high-end fantasy talent even without Larkin. Moritz Seider remains the defenseman I want most; he had 60 points last season and is positioned to quarterback Detroit’s top special-teams opportunities. Opening-game usage had DeBrincat, Copp, Raymond, Seider and Viktor Arvidsson together on the first power-play unit.
One deeper player I’m watching is Emmitt Finnie. With Kasper out, Finnie is projected between Michael Brandsegg-Nygard and Arvidsson. Opportunity is often more important than reputation in short-term fantasy decisions, and a young forward suddenly receiving top-six minutes can create value before the market adjusts.

Projection note: These projections assume the player dresses and receives meaningful minutes. Point ranges are matchup projections, not guarantees.
My fantasy takeaway: Winnipeg has the stronger concentration of healthy high-end offensive talent. Detroit can absolutely generate fantasy production, but removing Larkin from the middle forces Copp and others into tougher offensive assignments.
Top Five Winnipeg Jets and Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Scorers From Last Season
Winnipeg’s offense was extremely top-heavy last season. Scheifele reached 103 points, Connor had 92 and Vilardi contributed 69. Detroit was more balanced at the top, with DeBrincat at 85, Raymond at 76, Larkin at 67 and Seider at 60. Patrick Kane’s 57 points also ranked fifth for Detroit, although Kane returned to Chicago during the offseason and is no longer part of the Red Wings lineup.

Injuries and Absences That Could Affect Fantasy Value
Detroit’s absences have the most immediate skater impact. Larkin is out with an upper-body injury, and coach Todd McLellan has indicated the hope is for him to return against Ottawa on Tuesday. Kasper is also unavailable with an upper-body issue, while Jacob Bernard-Docker is on injured reserve. Simon Edvinsson’s situation is different: We list him out because of a contract dispute, not an injury.
For fantasy managers, Larkin’s absence pushes Copp into the middle of DeBrincat and Raymond and increases the importance of those two wingers generating offense themselves. Finnie’s top-six opportunity also becomes more interesting, while Seider becomes even more important as a puck mover and power-play driver.
Winnipeg is missing Elias Salomonsson, Walker Duehr and Garrett Brown, but the defining absence is Hellebuyck’s suspension for failing to report to camp following his offseason trade request. Winnipeg has shifted to Stuart Skinner and Clay Stevenson. Scott Arniel did not name Sunday’s starter and said both goalies would be used with Winnipeg entering a busy stretch.
That makes Winnipeg’s crease one of my biggest fantasy-risk areas today.
Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings Salary-Cap Snapshot
We currently list Winnipeg with a $91,105,806 projected cap hit and $12,894,194 in projected cap space against the $104 million ceiling. Detroit sits at $87,232,082 projected and $16,767,918 in projected space. That works out to roughly 87.6% projected utilization for Winnipeg and 83.9% for Detroit.
Cap flexibility can influence future roster additions, waivers and player opportunity. It is contextual roster information and does not directly predict today’s game result.
Detroit has more immediate flexibility to absorb salary or shuffle its roster, but I would not connect that directly to Sunday’s outcome. Its fantasy importance is longer term: roster space can create opportunities when injuries, waivers or trades force changes.
Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings Fantasy Hockey Prediction
MY SCORE PREDICTION: Winnipeg Jets 3 – Detroit Red Wings 2
I’m leaning toward Winnipeg in a close game because I trust the Jets’ healthy high-end scoring group more than Detroit’s current center depth. Connor and Scheifele give Winnipeg two proven offensive engines, Perfetti is receiving premium deployment, and Morrissey can create offense from the blue line.
Detroit’s counterargument is strong. The Red Wings won both meetings last season, they’re at home, and their 2025-26 power play was better than Winnipeg’s. DeBrincat and Raymond remain dangerous enough to turn one mistake into a goal. But Detroit produced only 22 shots and no goals against the Rangers on Friday, and I don’t love the timing of facing Winnipeg without Larkin or Kasper.
Goaltending is the variable that keeps me from being more confident. Winnipeg has not announced whether Skinner or Stevenson will start, and Detroit has John Gibson and Daniil Tarasov listed without a confirmed starter at the time of research. If Winnipeg gets merely average goaltending, I think its top line creates enough offense to win 3-2.
What I’m watching: the final result matters less to fantasy managers than Detroit’s power-play deployment and Winnipeg’s crease. If Detroit continues to give DeBrincat, Raymond and Seider heavy PP1 exposure, those players retain strong weekly value even while Larkin is out. On Winnipeg’s side, Skinner’s workload relative to Stevenson could tell us far more about future goalie value than one final score.
