Mark Scheifele in a Montreal Canadiens home jersey amid trade rumors linking the Winnipeg Jets centre to Montreal.
Mark Scheifele is pictured in a Montreal Canadiens home jersey as trade rumors continue to connect the Winnipeg Jets star centre to Montreal while Connor Hellebuyck’s future remains uncertain.

The Montreal Canadiens may suddenly have another path to the impact centre they have been chasing, and this one could depend almost entirely on what happens next with the Winnipeg Jets.

Montreal has reportedly already checked on Mark Scheifele’s availability, according to reporting attributed to Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos. There is no indication that the Winnipeg Jets are actively shopping Scheifele or that the Canadiens have made a formal offer, but Connor Hellebuyck’s unresolved trade request creates a fascinating question: what happens to Winnipeg’s competitive plan if its franchise goaltender is eventually moved?

That question became even more relevant Saturday when national speculation identified Montreal as one of the most logical destinations should Scheifele ever become available. The fit is obvious. The Canadiens have Nick Suzuki, but adding Scheifele would create one of the NHL’s most dangerous one-two combinations down the middle.

And unlike many speculative Canadiens trade targets, there is an important distinction here: Montreal has reportedly already made the phone call.

That doesn’t mean a blockbuster is close. It does mean this situation deserves watching.

Why the Winnipeg Jets Could Face a Mark Scheifele Decision

The entire theory starts with Connor Hellebuyck.

Hellebuyck publicly confirmed in August that he had requested a trade from the Winnipeg Jets. He subsequently failed to report to training camp and was suspended by the club while general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff continued searching for a deal capable of helping Winnipeg rather than simply unloading its franchise goalie.

That last part matters.

Cheveldayoff has publicly indicated that he does not want a return built so far into the future that it sends the wrong message to veterans such as Scheifele, Kyle Connor, Josh Morrissey and Dylan Samberg. In other words, Winnipeg has not publicly declared a rebuild. Quite the opposite.

But plans can change.

If Winnipeg trades Hellebuyck for a package that makes the Jets weaker today, management eventually has to ask whether keeping a 33-year-old Scheifele through a transitional period remains the best use of one of the organization’s most valuable assets.

That is where Montreal becomes fascinating.

Bleacher Report identified the Canadiens on Oct. 3 as one of four logical Scheifele destinations if Winnipeg ever decides to make him available, pointing directly to Montreal’s need for another high-end centre behind Suzuki.

Mark Scheifele: 3-Year Scoring Trend

NHLTradeRumor.com Data Snapshot
2023-2472 points
2024-2587 points
2025-26103 points
Scheifele’s production has climbed in three consecutive seasons, culminating in a career-high 103 points in 2025-26.

The underlying numbers are difficult to ignore. Scheifele went from 72 points in 2023-24 to 87 in 2024-25 and a career-high 103 points last season, producing 36 goals and 67 assists over 82 games.

That is not the statistical profile of a fading second-line centre. It’s elite offensive production.

Why Mark Scheifele Makes So Much Sense for the Montreal Canadiens

From my perspective, Montreal’s interest makes substantially more sense than some of the other centre rumors surrounding this team.

The Canadiens don’t need somebody to replace Suzuki. They need someone who prevents opponents from loading every difficult matchup against Suzuki.

Imagine a playoff series where Martin St. Louis can send Suzuki over the boards, then follow him with Scheifele while Ivan Demidov, Cole Caufield and Juraj Slafkovsky are spread across those top-six combinations.

That changes how an opponent defends Montreal.

Scheifele would also arrive with contractual certainty. His $8.5 million cap hit runs through 2030-31, although the important complication for any immediate trade is that his contract carries a no-movement clause this season. From 2027-28 onward, it converts to a modified no-trade clause with a 10-team approved trade list.

So Scheifele has meaningful control over this process. Winnipeg cannot simply decide Montreal is the destination.

Canadiens Salary Cap Calculator: Can Montreal Fit Scheifele?

This is where a theoretical blockbuster becomes considerably more complicated.

We list Montreal with approximately $1.89 million in projected cap space against the $104 million 2026-27 ceiling. Scheifele carries an $8.5 million cap hit.

That leaves Montreal roughly $6.61 million short of accommodating his full cap hit today without moving salary elsewhere.

CAP VERDICT: Montreal cannot absorb Scheifele’s full cap hit today without sending significant salary out, involving retention or making another roster move.
Cap space changes throughout the season. This calculation uses Montreal’s projected cap position and Scheifele’s full $8.5M annual cap hit.

There is an intriguing wrinkle, however. We currently project Montreal for approximately $8.95 million in deadline cap space if its cap trajectory remains intact. That means timing dramatically changes the mathematics.

An October Scheifele trade requires significant salary engineering.

A late-season Scheifele trade potentially does not.

NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index: What Would Mark Scheifele Cost?

I would put Scheifele near the top end of the NHLTradeRumor.com Trade Value Index.

He is an elite-producing centre, has five seasons of contractual control remaining after this season began, and carries a cap hit that could become increasingly attractive as the league’s salary ceiling grows.

His age and trade protection are the two factors preventing his value from reaching the very top of the scale.

Estimated market: A premium prospect or young NHL player would likely anchor a package, with additional high-value assets required. This is an NHLTradeRumor.com analytical model, not a reported Winnipeg asking price.

Kypreos’ reporting, as relayed by The Hockey News, has floated names including Michael Hage, Oliver Kapanen and Kirby Dach when discussing what the Canadiens might have to surrender for a player of Scheifele’s calibre. Those names should not be mistaken for a confirmed Winnipeg asking price or an actual Montreal offer.

That distinction is important.

The Biggest Question Isn’t Montreal: It’s Winnipeg

If I am Kent Hughes, I absolutely stay in contact with Cheveldayoff.

But I don’t force this trade.

Montreal is finally in a position where it has young NHL talent, prospects, cap flexibility in future seasons and enough organizational depth to wait for the right opportunity. Scheifele could be that opportunity, but paying an enormous price for his age-33 through age-38 seasons introduces risk.

For Winnipeg, the decision is even more complicated.

Scheifele just produced 103 points. He is chasing major franchise scoring records. Trading him immediately after moving Hellebuyck would send an unmistakable message that the Jets are changing direction.

And there is currently no evidence management has made that decision.

That’s why the Hellebuyck resolution is so important.

If Winnipeg receives NHL-ready talent for its goalie and remains competitive, the Scheifele conversation could disappear almost immediately.

If Hellebuyck leaves and the Jets struggle, however, every contender looking for an elite centre will be watching Winnipeg.

The Montreal Canadiens have apparently already made sure their name is in that conversation.

That makes this one of the NHL trade rumors worth tracking as the 2026-27 season unfolds.
