NHL rumors for February 1, 2022 feature the Montreal Canadiens targeting pending unrestricted free agent Patrice Bergeron in the offseason.

The Montreal Canadiens season has been a write-off and they will be in the Shane Wright sweepstakes when the season ends in April. NHL rumors are floating around that new Habs GM Kent Hughes will be looking to sign or trade for leadership in the offseason.

Guillaume Lefrancois of La Presse reports the Montreal Canadiens need to address toughness and leadership. He feels they need another center in order to support Nick Suzuki.

Lefrancois went on to say, it is very possible that Hughes will target Patrice Bergeron in the offseason. Hughes was Bergeron’s agent for 20 years, and the Bruins center, whose leadership is unmistakable, is still without a contract for next season.

Bergeron would be an excellent addition to the Canadiens to mentor Suzuki and possibly Wright if the Habs get lucky with the NHL draft lottery results. The big question is, will Bergeron leave the Boston Bruins?

  1. Teams are more likely to be renters because of the risk with getting players with term on their contract. The Bruins should be one of the teams that take a chance because their core is very close to the end.I hope they learned something with the Krecji situation.I am advocating that they take a shot at Chycrun or JTmiller.Mcavoy desperately needs a solid number 1 d partner, who could play with him for 10 years.Miller would be insurance in case Bergeron follows Krecji out the door. The Bruins do not have a top 6 center in their entire organization, that could replace either 37 or 46.
