In a decision that could shape the franchise’s short-term future, the Ottawa Senators have announced they will retain their 2025 first round draft pick, thereby forfeiting their 2026 selection as punishment stemming from the Evgenii Dadonov trade debacle.
During the team’s end-of-season media availability, general manager Steve Staios addressed the long-awaited decision, saying, “It’s highly likely we’ll keep our pick.” That statement confirms that Ottawa plans to use its 2025 first-rounder, which is projected to be the 21st overall draft pick.
Why the Senators Are Keeping Their 2025 First Round Draft Pick
The Senators were forced into this choice due to a penalty levied by the NHL after the mishandling of Evgenii Dadonov’s limited no-trade clause during Pierre Dorion’s tenure. Ottawa dealt Dadonov to Vegas in 2021 without disclosing his no-trade clause, which later blocked a 2022 deal between Vegas and Anaheim. The NHL determined Ottawa was at fault, and as punishment, the organization must forfeit a first-round pick in either 2024, 2025, or 2026.
Ottawa chose to defer the penalty in 2024, citing a need to restock the prospect pipeline. Now, with several core pieces aging into prime years and a clear path towards Stanley Cup contention, Staios believes this summer’s pick is essential. “We feel this pick gives us the best chance to build around our existing group,” he added.
From a strategic standpoint, this is the right call. The 2025 draft class has solid depth but lacks the high-end star power of 2026’s projected group. By using the pick now, Ottawa can inject more talent into its roster immediately while hoping that the loss of next year’s pick stings less due to improved on-ice performance.
With the NHL Draft lottery to be determined today, the Senators know where they stand—although as a playoff team, they were never eligible for a lottery win. Now, all eyes turn toward what Staios and his scouting staff do with this valuable selection.
