Minnesota reportedly has only approximately $1.15 million in available cap space, while Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit.
Elsewhere, Calgary’s previously reported interest in Montreal Canadiens defenseman Arber Xhekaj has apparently cooled, Ottawa Senators coach Travis Green has publicly discussed his reaction to Brady Tkachuk’s trade request, and the Toronto Maple Leafs have made a potentially significant investment in player performance.

Why a Dylan Larkin Trade to Minnesota Remains Difficult
The biggest problem is not identifying Minnesota as a logical destination. The problem is constructing a trade that works for both teams.
Detroit reportedly wants at least one proven NHL player in the return and has not been impressed enough by the collection of younger players Minnesota is willing to move. Matt Boldy was reportedly part of Detroit’s preferred return, but the Wild have shown no willingness to trade one of their most important young forwards.
The cap math creates another major complication. Subtracting Minnesota’s reported $1.15 million in space from Larkin’s $8.7 million cap charge leaves a gap of approximately $7.55 million. Minnesota would therefore need to move significant salary, send an expensive contract to Detroit, or persuade the Red Wings to retain money.
My read is that Larkin beginning the season in Detroit is now more likely than a rushed August trade. Detroit is still searching for a permanent replacement for Steve Yzerman in the general manager’s chair, and it would be surprising to see the organization make a franchise-altering trade before its new decision-maker establishes a direction.
That does not mean the trade request has disappeared. It means the next Red Wings general manager could inherit the most difficult negotiation of the NHL offseason.
Calgary’s Earlier Arber Xhekaj Interest Has Reportedly Cooled
The latest report provides an important update to the earlier rumors linking Xhekaj with Calgary.
The Flames reportedly had interest in the Canadiens defenseman but no longer view him as a fit after acquiring Jake Middleton from Minnesota. Calgary landed Middleton in the July 2 trade that sent Blake Coleman and Olli Määttä to the Wild.
From a roster-construction perspective, that conclusion makes sense. Middleton gives Calgary an established, physical left-shot defenseman, reducing the need to spend additional assets on another player with overlapping qualities.
This also illustrates why trade interest should never be presented as an inevitable transaction. Calgary may have legitimately explored Xhekaj, but its needs changed after completing another move. The earlier report appears to have accurately identified interest, while today’s update confirms that those discussions did not develop into a trade.
Xhekaj could still attract attention elsewhere. However, Philadelphia has also been questioned as a potential fit because the Flyers already employ physical defensemen Simon Benoit and Nick Seeler.
Travis Green Opens Up About Brady Tkachuk’s Exit
Senators coach Travis Green has now provided one of the most revealing public reactions to Tkachuk’s trade request.
Green admitted he was surprised and disappointed when he learned Ottawa’s captain wanted to leave. His most direct assessment was: “Would I say mad? A little bit.” Green nevertheless emphasized that players make decisions, organizations adjust and the Senators must move forward.
Ottawa received three first-round selections in the Tkachuk transaction and subsequently used one of those assets as part of its move to acquire William Eklund. Green continues to express confidence in the Senators’ younger core and believes the team can remain competitive without its former captain.
The real test will be whether Ottawa can replace Tkachuk’s emotional influence without allowing his departure to dominate the season. Eklund can add speed and creativity, but he is not a direct stylistic replacement for one of the league’s most physical forwards.
Toronto Maple Leafs Invest in Player Performance
Toronto has named Andy O’Brien its vice president of sport performance, placing him in charge of strength and conditioning, sports science, nutrition, injury rehabilitation and mental performance.
O’Brien has more than 25 years of experience and previously worked with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers. His résumé includes work with four Stanley Cup-winning teams, while his private training practice has supported prominent NHL players, including John Tavares.
This will not generate the reaction of a major trade, but it could become one of Toronto’s more meaningful offseason decisions. Player availability, recovery and performance management can determine whether an aging or injury-prone roster reaches the playoffs in good condition.
The Maple Leafs are clearly attempting to modernize more than their lineup. They are building a larger support structure around their players, and O’Brien’s experience suggests this is more than a cosmetic front-office hire.
