November 11 NHL History

1930: The NHL comes to Philadelphia for the first time. But the Philadelphia Quakers lose 3-0 to the New York Rangers when goaltender John Ross Roach earns his 28th NHL shutout. The Quakers go 4-36-4 and drop out of the League after one season, leaving Philadelphia without an NHL team until the arrival of the Flyers in 1967.

1943: Clint Smith of the Chicago Blackhawks does something no NHL player has done before, scoring the first empty-net goal in NHL history.

Smith already has one goal in Chicago’s game against the Boston Bruins at Boston Garden, helping the Blackhawks take a 5-4 lead into the final minutes of play. With the Blackhawks down a goal, Bruins coach Art Ross pulls goaltender Bert Gardiner for an extra attacker to go for the tie. Instead, Smith puts the puck into the now-vacated net with 48 seconds remaining, wrapping up a 6-4 win.

1962: Goalie Terry Sawchuk earns his 350th victory with the Detroit Red Wings. The milestone comes in Detroit’s 3-2 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Alex Delvecchio scores twice for the Red Wings, including the game-winner with 5:41 remaining in the third period.

1981: Bobby Smith and the Minnesota North Stars enjoy the biggest offensive nights in their history.

Smith scores four goals and has three assists for a seven-point game to help the North Stars defeat the Winnipeg Jets 15-2 at Met Center. Two of Smith’s goals come during Minnesota’s eight-goal second period.

The Jets trail 4-2 after Bengt Lundholm scores 5:02 into the second period, but the North Stars get the next 11 goals.

The North Stars become the second team since the adoption of the red line in 1943 to score 15 goals in one game, joining the Detroit Red Wings (15-0 against the New York Rangers on Jan. 23, 1944).

1986: Ciccarelli scores twice in his 15th game of the season, setting set a modern-day NHL record for the fastest 20 goals from a season’s start. He gets both goals for the North Stars in a 2-2 tie with the Washington Capitals. Joe Malone holds the all-time record with 20 goals in eight games in 1917-18, the NHL’s first season.

1989: Guy Lafleur scores his 544th NHL goal, tying Maurice Richard for eighth place on the all-time list. It comes in the Quebec Nordiques’ 3-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks at Le Colisee.

2009: Ken Hitchcock’s 1,000th game as an NHL coach turns out to be one he’d rather forget. The Red Wings score four times in the first period and roll to a 9-1 victory against Hitchcock’s Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena.

2010: Alexander Semin scores three goals in the third period and has two assists to power Washington to a 6-3 win against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning. Semin stole the spotlight from teammate Alex Ovechkin and NHL scoring leader Steven Stamkos of the Lightning, and helped the Capitals win their sixth consecutive game.

2016: Defenseman Andy Greene scores on a penalty shot in overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 2-1 victory against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Arena. Greene is the first Devils player to score on a penalty shot in OT and the first New Jersey defenseman to score on a penalty shot since Scott Niedermayer exactly 18 years earlier against Montreal.
