1962: Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Glenn Hall doesn’t play against the Montreal Canadiens at the Forum, ending one of the most incredible games-played streak in any sport.
Hall sits out with a back injury after playing 502 consecutive regular-season games, the most of any goaltender in NHL history. He plays every second of the first 501 games but is forced to leave Game No. 502 with back problems.
Denis DeJordy takes Hall’s place and makes 33 saves to help the Blackhawks to a 3-1 win. DeJordy starts each of the next three games before Hall returns on Nov. 17.
1963: Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings becomes the League’s all-time leading goal scorer, passing Maurice Richard. Appropriately, the record-setting goal comes in a 3-0 victory against the visiting Canadiens, Richard’s longtime team before retiring in 1960. Goal No. 545 comes when Howe scores shorthanded against goalie Charlie Hodge at 15:06 of the second period. He receives a 10-minute ovation from the crowd of 15,077 at Olympia Stadium.
1999: Steve Yzerman of the Red Wings become the League’s all-time leader in points among players who spend their entire careers with one team. The milestone goal comes in a 4-2 road victory against the Dallas Stars and gives him 1,495 points, one more than Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh Penguins). Yzerman finishes his NHL career with 1,755 points, all with the Red Wings.
2007: Jeremy Roenick scores his 500th NHL goal to help the San Jose Sharks defeat the visiting Phoenix Coyotes 4-1. Roenick becomes the third U.S.-born player to score 500 goals.
2015: Alex Ovechkin matches his NHL career high with 15 shots on goal, but none of them gets past Detroit goaltender Petr Mrazek, who earns his sixth NHL shutout by making 38 saves in a 1-0 victory against the Washington Capitals at Joe Louis Arena. Detroit’s Andreas Athanasiou scores 4:06 into the third period.
