The NHL trade market is abuzz as online speculation indicates a potential blockbuster deal between the Arizona Coyotes and Toronto Maple Leafs, centering around an Ilya Samsonov trade.
Trade chatter reveals that the Arizona Coyotes are in talks to send defenseman Matt Dumba, goalie Connor Ingram, and a 2024 3rd-round pick to Toronto. In return, the Coyotes would receive T.J. Brodie, who would indeed have to waive his no-trade clause, goaltender Ilya Samsonov, prospect Nick Moldenhauer, and a coveted 1st round pick in 2024.
NHL Rumors: Will Joseph Woll become the Leafs #1 goalie?
Why would the Leafs trade Ilya Samsonov and get Matt Dumba?
This high-stakes exchange is both a strategic player and salary cap maneuver. The Maple Leafs are poised to add a significant physical presence on their blue line with right-handed shooting defenseman Matt Dumba, simultaneously securing a reliable backup in Ingram. This move seems particularly timely as Connor Timmons’ impending return from injured reserve necessitates space.
Moreover, with Joseph Woll’s emerging performance, speculation is rife that he’s the future #1 goaltender for the Leafs, making Samsonov’s departure a logical play. In contrast, the Coyotes are not only aiding the Leafs in salary cap relief but also investing in their future, adding a first-round selection and potential in Moldenhauer.
Need a little more than Dumba to get rid of a 1st and Brodie who isn’t much worse than Dumba
Just too many soft goals with Samsonov. Woll is legit number one.
Jones is a very good back-up. Brodie is a liability defender. Do the deal
I think we do need a giy like Dumba… so Im kindda ok with this trade, after all we still have Jones we can bring up.
Leafs don’t have a 2024 first round pick. Belongs to Chicago for McCabe and Lafferty.
They don’t have a 2025 first round pick.
I wouldn’t include no first round pick maybe a third
I think the Leafs have finally found a legit homegrown talented goalie in Woll. I am ok with the trade scenario above. I have always like Dumba.
Love this trade, but not sure I would give up on Ilya Samsonov just yet!
