As an NHL analyst watching the Minnesota Wild navigate their salary cap purgatory over the last few seasons, the latest trade rumors aren’t surprising. If you clicked on this expecting a simple “yes” or “no” on whether the Minnesota Wild will trade Jesper Wallstedt this summer, here is the reality: General Manager Bill Guerin is caught between a rock and a hard place.

The Wild desperately need a legitimate No. 1 center, and Wallstedt is arguably their most valuable trade chip. According to NHL insider Nick Kypreos on Sportsnet, Wallstedt was on the trade board during the season as bait for that elusive top-line pivot. However, Wallstedt’s dominant playoff performance have elevated his status to a true No. 1 guy. The plot thickens because Filip Gustavsson’s impending $6.8 million cap hit, full no-move clause, and off-season hip surgery severely complicate the timeline. Will Wallstedt be dealt? My expert take is that a goalie trade is inevitable for Minnesota, but due to Gustavsson’s murky health status, Wallstedt is highly likely to start the season in Saint Paul. The right deal just isn’t there yet.

Navigating Filip Gustavsson’s Injury and the Minnesota Wild Goalie Dilemma

When you look at the architecture of a Stanley Cup contender, goaltending depth is a luxury, but elite center depth is a necessity. The Minnesota Wild have an abundance of the former and a glaring lack of the latter. Moving a blue-chip prospect like Jesper Wallstedt is a terrifying proposition for any franchise, but you have to give value to get value.

The primary roadblock right now is Filip Gustavsson. With Gustavsson heading into a massive $6.8 million AAV contract with full no-move protection, trading him was already going to be a monumental task. Add in his off-season hip surgery, and it becomes nearly impossible. As Bill Guerin noted, the team won’t even know if Gustavsson will be ready for the start of training camp until the procedure is finished. NHL general managers are notoriously risk-averse; they aren’t going to surrender premium assets for a goaltender with a recovering hip and a massive cap hit. Because of this, Wallstedt remains the only movable asset if the Wild want to make a splash this summer. I believe we will eventually see one of these goalies shipped out, but timing is everything. Expect both goalies to be at camp.

Potential Trade Destinations for Jesper Wallstedt

If the Minnesota Wild do decide to pull the trigger and trade Jesper Wallstedt, who is picking up the phone?

The Edmonton Oilers, Ottawa Senators, and St. Louis Blues have all been heavily linked to the young Swede. From my perspective, the Oilers are the most desperate. Edmonton would absolutely love to land Wallstedt to solidify their crease for the McDavid era, but there is a major problem: asset management. The Oilers simply do not have the high-end draft capital or blue-chip prospects required to match offer sheets from teams like Ottawa or St. Louis. The Senators, armed with a deeper prospect pool, could easily put together a package centered around a top-six forward that Minnesota covets.
