The Pittsburgh Penguins like many other teams in the NHL are in a salary cap crunch and they can only afford to sign one of Evgeni Malkin or Kris Letang after the re-signing of Bryan Rust.
The NHL trade rumors mill has been mentioning that Evgeni Malkin would be the one to go, maybe to the KHL or another NHL team but it is looking like he could re-sign with the Penguins as Letang has more value and interest in the free agent market.
Dan Kingerski of Pittsburgh Hockey Now reports the Penguins should find a way to re-sign Letang as the drop off is steep in the free agent market but he believes Letang will leave when the Free Agent Frenzy period starts.
Kingerski went on to say, Letang is a premier right-handed defenceman who finished 6th in scoring for defenceman. He predicts Letang will get $9 million for four seasons, by signing with another team.
If Letang does indeed leave the Penguins, Jeff Petry would be the #1 choice to replace Letang.
