Soviet Stars Join the NHL

On July 7, 1989, the New Jersey Devils introduced two groundbreaking Soviet defensemen, Viacheslav Fetisov and Sergei Starikov. This marked a significant moment as Fetisov, one of hockey’s greatest defensemen, had long lobbied Soviet authorities for the opportunity to play in North America. The duo’s entry paved the way for future Soviet players in the NHL. Fetisov played five seasons with the Devils, later winning Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998.

The Birth of Joe Sakic

July 7, 1969, saw the birth of Joe Sakic, the greatest player in the history of the Colorado Avalanche franchise. Drafted by the Quebec Nordiques in 1987, Sakic quickly became an NHL star, leading the Avalanche to their first Stanley Cup in 1996 and another in 2001. His illustrious career, marked by numerous trophies and over 1,600 points, culminated in his Hall of Fame induction in 2012. Sakic continues to shape the team as an executive.

Quenneville’s Coaching Career Begins

On July 7, 2004, the Colorado Avalanche hired Joel Quenneville as their head coach. During his tenure, Quenneville led the team to consistent performances, but it was his later work with the Chicago Blackhawks that cemented his legacy. He guided the Blackhawks to three Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013, and 2015, making him one of the most successful coaches in NHL history.
