On July 11, 2001, the Pittsburgh Penguins traded five-time NHL scoring champion Jaromir Jagr to the Washington Capitals for prospects Kris Beech, Michal Sivek, and Ross Lupaschuk. Jagr, who had 1,079 points in 806 games with the Penguins, faced a challenging stint with the Capitals before being traded to the New York Rangers.

In addition to historic trades, July 11 marks the birthday of Hall of Fame defenseman Al MacInnis. Born in 1963 in Inverness, Nova Scotia, MacInnis was known for his powerful slap shot and won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1989 as the playoff MVP, leading the Calgary Flames to victory.
