The Erik Karlsson experiment in Pittsburgh is on life support—and NHL insiders believe it could be over entirely this offseason. Acquired with high hopes just two summers ago, Karlsson’s tenure with the Penguins has been underwhelming, both in impact and fit.
According to Josh Yohe of The Athletic, the acquisition of the three-time Norris Trophy winner was bold, but it’s now seen as a “failed experiment.” Karlsson has not provided the elite transition game or power-play punch that general manager Kyle Dubas hoped for. Instead, he’s been a defensive liability at times, and the chemistry on the Penguins’ blue line never fully materialized.
Karlsson’s $10 million cap hit—signed through the 2026-27 season—is a significant burden for a Penguins team caught between competing for the playoffs and preparing for a rebuild. Yohe suggests that Dubas could retain $2.5 million of Karlsson’s salary in a trade, but based on current market conditions, my take is Pittsburgh may need to retain at least $3 million to make a deal work.
Why the Penguins Could Move on From Erik Karlsson This Offseason
The main hurdle is Karlsson’s no-movement clause. While a handful of contending teams might consider adding a player of Karlsson’s pedigree, those same clubs are typically right up against the NHL salary cap. Unless Dubas is willing to sweeten the deal or Karlsson waives his NMC for a very specific destination, options could be limited.
Still, Dubas has shown creativity before—whether it’s a multi-team trade, taking back expiring contracts, or including prospects to sweeten the pot, a Karlsson move isn’t out of the question. The bigger question may be when—does Dubas strike early in the offseason, or wait for the right opportunity?
With Kris Letang aging and Sidney Crosby’s contract nearing its end, expect the Penguins to be active. Whether Karlsson stays or goes, this summer will be critical in shaping Pittsburgh’s short-term and long-term future.

Dumb article. Karlsson will be in Pittsburgh again next year – nobody wants him.
