Quinn Hughes still does not have a contract extension with the Minnesota Wild, and while there is no verified indication that Minnesota is shopping its superstar defenseman, the longer negotiations remain unresolved, the louder the trade speculation is going to become. At the same time, Patrik Laine remains one of the most intriguing unrestricted free agents available, with Toronto, Florida, Tampa Bay and Dallas among the teams reportedly connected to his market.
There is also encouraging news out of Colorado. Cale Makar expects to be healthy when Avalanche training camp begins, confirming an earlier expectation from the organization following the injury that caused him to miss the opening two games of the Western Conference Final.
Meanwhile, Robert Thomas has become the new face of the St. Louis Blues‘ leadership group, Ottawa has a significant Drake Batherson contract decision approaching, and Canadian hockey fans now know what the first season of Wednesday Night Hockey on Prime Video will look like.

The Quinn Hughes situation is rapidly becoming one of the NHL’s most important storylines entering September.
Minnesota general manager Bill Guerin has expressed confidence that the Wild will eventually reach an agreement with Hughes. However, training camp is less than two weeks away and no extension has been announced. Hughes is entering the final year of his current deal and can become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
That naturally creates trade speculation, but there is an important distinction NHL fans should keep in mind.
Michael Russo has pushed back on internet chatter suggesting Minnesota and the New Jersey Devils are already engaged in Hughes trade discussions. In other words, the contract uncertainty is real; verified Hughes trade talks are not.
My observation: this is exactly how a superstar trade rumor begins to gain momentum even when the team has no immediate intention of moving the player. Every week without a contract shifts a little more leverage toward Hughes and increases the questions Guerin will face. Minnesota can be confident today and still eventually reach a point where it must protect the enormous asset value it invested in Hughes.
For now, I would classify this as a contract story with trade implications, rather than an active trade negotiation.
Patrik Laine’s Free-Agent Market Is Getting More Interesting
Patrik Laine could be the player to watch as teams begin reporting for camp.
Bruce Garrioch’s reporting has connected the Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars to Laine. Ottawa also discussed the winger, although Garrioch indicated a Senators signing is considered unlikely because the organization apparently does not view him as the right roster fit.
The fascinating part is that those destinations have dramatically different salary-cap situations.
PuckPedia’s latest roster snapshots have Florida sitting with roughly $34,000 in projected space and Tampa Bay with approximately $3.23 million. Toronto is currently projected about $2.75 million above the $104 million ceiling, while Dallas is approximately $1.36 million above it before the necessary opening-night cap manoeuvring.

My observation: Florida might be one of the most appealing destinations for Laine from a pure hockey standpoint, but the Panthers’ salary-cap situation changes the equation considerably. With only $34,286 in available cap space, Florida cannot simply sign Laine and make the numbers work. General manager Bill Zito would first need to clear salary through a trade, waiver move or another roster transaction. That doesn’t eliminate Florida from the conversation, but it makes the Panthers considerably less feasible than a team capable of accommodating a short-term Laine contract without first moving money. Tampa Bay may therefore be the most interesting team to watch if Laine’s asking price falls into prove-it-contract territory.
Cale Makar Confirms Encouraging Injury News
Colorado received exactly the update it wanted from Cale Makar.
The Avalanche superstar says he expects to be healthy when training camp opens after the injury that forced him out of the first two Western Conference Final games. The news comes shortly after Makar signed his record eight-year, $163.2 million extension.
This also provides a useful example of an earlier report being confirmed. Colorado’s management had previously indicated that Makar was expected to be healthy for camp; Makar has now personally reinforced that timeline.
For Colorado, that matters almost as much as the contract itself. A healthy Makar means the Avalanche enter camp without uncertainty surrounding the most important defenseman in their lineup.
Robert Thomas Becomes the Face of the Blues
There should also be far fewer Robert Thomas trade rumors now.
The St. Louis Blues named Thomas the 25th captain in franchise history, replacing Brayden Schenn after Schenn was dealt to the Islanders last season. Thomas has five seasons remaining on his eight-year, $65 million contract and has led St. Louis in scoring in each of the past three seasons.
To me, giving Thomas the “C” says something more significant than simply identifying a dressing-room leader.
It looks like an organizational commitment.
Thomas’ name surfaced in trade discussion previously, but naming a 27-year-old star with five years remaining on his contract captain is about as strong a public signal as management can send that it expects him to remain central to the next competitive Blues team.
Drake Batherson’s September 15 Deadline Is Worth Watching
Ottawa has another contract situation quietly moving toward an important date.
Drake Batherson is entering the final season of his six-year contract carrying a $4.975 million cap hit and is scheduled for unrestricted free agency in 2027. Batherson is reportedly interested in maximum term, while earlier reporting indicated a meaningful gap remained between the two sides.
September 15 matters because it is the final day under the current rules for Ottawa to give Batherson an eight-year extension before the new CBA reduces the maximum extension term for a club’s own player.
Batherson produced 33 goals and 71 points last season, so this isn’t a secondary contract negotiation. Ottawa is dealing with a top-line-calibre offensive player approaching unrestricted free agency.
That deserves significantly more attention than it has received.
NHL Announces New Wednesday Night Hockey Schedule on Prime

Prime Video unveiled its new 27-game Wednesday Night Hockey schedule for Canada. The package opens September 30 with the Toronto Maple Leafs hosting the New York Islanders, potentially setting up a showcase between No. 1 picks Gavin McKenna and Matthew Schaefer.
Montreal leads Canadian teams with seven appearances, Toronto has six, while Ottawa, Winnipeg and Calgary each have four. The schedule also includes Brady Tkachuk’s return to Ottawa with Florida on October 21 and an Oilers-Flames Battle of Alberta one week later.
For Canadian fans, this is an important shift in how NHL games will be consumed over the next decade. Prime is no longer experimenting around the edges of hockey broadcasting, it is becoming one of the league’s major distribution partners.
