The Minnesota Wild aren’t trying to trade Quinn Hughes. In fact, general manager Bill Guerin says he remains confident the superstar defenceman can be signed long term.
But one sentence from Guerin is why the Quinn Hughes trade rumors aren’t disappearing.
“We can’t make him sign anything.”
That’s the reality hanging over Minnesota as Hughes enters the final season of his contract without an extension. Hughes can become an unrestricted free agent in July 2027, and despite months of optimism from the Minnesota Wild, there is still no new deal.
That doesn’t mean Hughes is heading to the New Jersey Devils. The most credible reporting available actually says the opposite: Minnesota has not been engaged in trade discussions with New Jersey or other teams regarding Hughes.
But it does mean something important has changed.
The Wild are no longer simply waiting for Hughes to become eligible for an extension. He has been eligible since July 1. Training camp is getting closer, Cale Makar has established a massive new benchmark for elite NHL defencemen, and Minnesota still doesn’t have Hughes’ signature.
At some point, contract uncertainty inevitably becomes a hockey decision.
Quinn Hughes Contract Talks Put the Minnesota Wild on the Clock
Guerin addressed the situation Monday and continued to preach patience.
He said communication with Hughes remains good and there is “no tension” between the sides. He also said he is confident a contract can eventually get done.
The fascinating part came when Guerin discussed what Hughes may actually want.
Makar’s record-setting extension gives Hughes and his representatives an obvious financial comparison, but Guerin essentially cautioned against assuming this negotiation is entirely about matching a number.
Hughes, he said, is a different person with different priorities.
That may be the most significant part of this entire story.
From my perspective, money shouldn’t be Minnesota’s biggest concern.
According to PuckPedia, the Wild currently project to have approximately $45.98 million in 2027-28 cap space, although that number comes with only part of the future roster under contract. Hughes currently carries a $7.85 million cap hit.
Minnesota has the financial runway to make an enormous offer.
The more difficult question is whether the Wild can offer Hughes everything else he wants.
Why the New Jersey Devils Keep Looming Over Quinn Hughes
This is where the Devils enter the conversation.
Jack Hughes is signed long term in New Jersey. Luke Hughes is there. The possibility of the three brothers eventually playing together has followed Quinn for years.
That connection makes New Jersey impossible to ignore whenever uncertainty develops around Quinn’s future.
But there needs to be a clear distinction between possibility and reporting.
Michael Russo of The Athletic reported in late August that Minnesota was not discussing a Quinn Hughes trade with the Devils, with sources strongly dismissing internet claims that negotiations were underway.
So this isn’t a report that New Jersey has made an offer.
It is an analysis of what could happen if Minnesota reaches a point where it no longer believes Hughes will extend.
And that’s where I believe Guerin’s position could eventually become uncomfortable.
The Wild paid an extraordinary price to acquire Hughes from Vancouver in December 2025: Zeev Buium, Marco Rossi, Liam Ohgren and a 2026 first-round pick.
You don’t make that trade to flip Hughes nine months later.
But you also don’t surrender that much organizational capital and then risk watching the player walk into unrestricted free agency for nothing.
That is the leverage point worth watching.

What Would Have to Happen Before Minnesota Actually Trades Hughes?
There are several steps between “unsigned” and “available.”
First, Hughes would have to indicate directly or indirectly that a long-term Minnesota extension isn’t going to happen.
Second, Guerin would have to determine whether Minnesota is better off making another Stanley Cup run with Hughes and risking the contract situation afterward, or protecting the enormous asset value invested in acquiring him.
Third, any team interested in Hughes would need to know whether he was prepared to sign there.
That last point is particularly important for New Jersey.
I don’t believe the Devils should surrender the kind of franchise-altering package Minnesota would demand unless they have confidence Hughes will sign long term. Conversely, Minnesota should have very little incentive to deal him cheaply simply because he has one year remaining.
This would be one of those rare NHL trades where both teams could reasonably demand certainty before proceeding.
There is another wrinkle worth monitoring closely: NHL contract rules change on September 16, 2026. Under the new CBA provisions, maximum contract lengths decrease, along with changes to signing-bonus structures and contract variability.
That creates a legitimate date on the calendar during an already fascinating negotiation.
Quinn Hughes’ Next Decision Matters More Than Any Devils Trade Rumor
For now, my read is that Minnesota remains the favourite to keep Quinn Hughes.
Hughes said after last season that he liked Minnesota and was open to re-signing. Guerin has repeatedly expressed confidence. Wild owner Craig Leipold has publicly spoken as though retaining Hughes is a priority.
Those are meaningful signals.
But an unsigned superstar approaching unrestricted free agency is never just another contract negotiation.
Every week without a deal increases the questions.
And if Hughes eventually tells Minnesota that his future is somewhere else, there may not be another NHL team capable of generating as much immediate speculation as the New Jersey Devils.
That’s why the story isn’t “Quinn Hughes is being traded to New Jersey.”
The story is that Minnesota still controls the situation, but Hughes controls the most important decision.
And until he signs, the Devils aren’t going away.
