Erik Karlsson wearing a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey still sounds more like NHL fantasy than an imminent transaction, but Elliotte Friedman just gave Leafs fans a legitimate reason to keep an eye on the Pittsburgh Penguins star.
On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, Friedman shared a prediction he heard while making calls around the league: depending on how the 2026-27 seasons unfold for Pittsburgh and Toronto, Karlsson could eventually become a Maple Leaf. Sportsnet itself describes the discussion as a “summer theory,” meaning this should not be interpreted as Friedman reporting active trade negotiations between the Maple Leafs and Penguins.
That distinction matters. But the idea is far more interesting than the usual summertime trade speculation.
Karlsson is entering the final season of his contract, still owns a no-movement clause and just produced 15 goals, 51 assists and 66 points in 75 games for Pittsburgh. At 36, he may no longer be the automatic Norris Trophy favourite he once was, but his offensive game clearly hasn’t disappeared.
And that’s where this Toronto Maple Leafs rumor gets fascinating.
Why an Erik Karlsson Trade to the Toronto Maple Leafs Could Get Interesting
The first connection is obvious: Toronto has suddenly assembled a fascinating Swedish leadership group.
Mats Sundin is now the Maple Leafs’ Senior Executive Advisor, while Daniel Alfredsson was hired as Jim Hiller’s associate coach this summer. Toronto’s official hockey-operations directory confirms both appointments. Karlsson and Alfredsson also spent Karlsson’s early NHL seasons together in Ottawa.
Would that guarantee Karlsson waives his no-movement clause for Toronto? Absolutely not.
But when a veteran possesses complete control over his destination, relationships matter. Karlsson’s no-movement protection gives him enormous influence over any potential trade, and having two iconic Swedish hockey figures already inside the organization certainly wouldn’t hurt Toronto’s pitch. Karlsson’s contract expires after 2026-27, when he is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent.
There’s another layer Friedman raised: Kyle Dubas’ long-standing appreciation for Karlsson. Friedman indicated Dubas had explored acquiring Karlsson while running Toronto before eventually completing the blockbuster that brought him to Pittsburgh.
My read is that Pittsburgh’s position in the standings will matter more than anything else.
If the Penguins are again a legitimate playoff team, I struggle to see why Dubas would move one of his most impactful defensemen. Karlsson was arguably too important last season to treat simply as an expiring asset. Pittsburgh named him its 2025-26 team MVP, and his 66-point season represented a major rebound.
If Pittsburgh falls out of contention, however, everything changes.
A 36-year-old pending UFA with substantial trade value is exactly the type of player a general manager has to consider moving rather than risk losing for nothing.
The Salary-Cap Problem Toronto Would Have to Solve
This is where the Erik Karlsson trade rumor gets difficult.
PuckPedia currently projects Toronto at roughly $106.75 million against a $104 million upper limit, leaving approximately $2.75 million in negative projected cap space before opening-night adjustments. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, carries a $10 million cap charge for Karlsson because San Jose continues to retain $1.5 million from the original $11.5 million cap hit.

That’s an important wrinkle because Morgan Rielly has a $7.5 million cap hit through 2029-30 and a no-movement clause, meaning Toronto can’t simply decide to move his contract either.
So any simplistic “Rielly for Karlsson” suggestion ignores two realities: both players control their destinations, and Pittsburgh retention would likely be necessary.
PuckPedia also lists Pittsburgh with approximately $10.9 million of projected cap space, which at least gives the Penguins theoretical financial flexibility if retaining salary produced a significantly better trade return.
My Take on the Erik Karlsson Maple Leafs Rumor
I wouldn’t expect a Karlsson trade before the season begins.
The scenario becomes much more believable around January through the NHL trade deadline if Pittsburgh falls back in the standings while Toronto establishes itself as a playoff team.
Karlsson would give the Maple Leafs something extremely difficult to acquire at the deadline: an elite puck-moving right-shot defenseman capable of creating offence under pressure and running a power play. Toronto already has Darren Raddysh on the right side, so Karlsson wouldn’t be filling an obvious empty roster spot. He would be an aggressive win-now luxury.
And that’s ultimately why Friedman’s prediction interests me.
This isn’t really a story about whether Toronto wants Erik Karlsson today. It’s about whether circumstances could make Karlsson available several months from now.
Pittsburgh’s record, Toronto’s trajectory, Karlsson’s performance and his willingness to waive his no-movement clause will determine whether this becomes a real NHL trade rumor or simply an entertaining August prediction.
