The Vancouver Canucks are once again at the center of offseason drama, and this time, it’s centered around their franchise forward Elias Pettersson. After a rocky season filled with internal tension, trade speculation, and disappointing performances, the question now facing general manager Patrik Allvin is clear—should the team trade Pettersson before his no-trade clause kicks in on July 1st?
The tension between J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson was one of the dominant storylines in Vancouver all year. Ultimately, the Canucks chose to deal Miller to the New York Rangers, hoping to end the drama. But Pettersson’s own future now appears just as murky.
Canucks GM Patrik Allvin recently raised eyebrows with a candid statement: “We still believe in him, but I would be, I guess, stupid not to keep my options open.” That’s a pretty clear sign that nothing is off the table heading into the 2025 NHL Draft.
Will Elias Pettersson Be the Next Star Moved by the Canucks?
With his no-trade protection set to kick in on July 1st, Vancouver has a small window to make a bold move. Pettersson still holds immense value on the trade market despite a streaky season, and several teams are reportedly lining up for his services.
The Carolina Hurricanes are seen as a top suitor. After failing to convince Mikko Rantanen to stay, they’re in the market for a top-tier offensive weapon. Pettersson fits the bill perfectly and could slot into their top six seamlessly.
Another team to watch is the Columbus Blue Jackets, who were previously interested in Pettersson before Vancouver ultimately dealt Miller instead. Columbus has cap space and is desperate to land a true No. 1 center to lead their young core.
From a personal standpoint, I believe Vancouver will only pull the trigger if the offer includes a blue-chip prospect and a high draft pick. Pettersson is still young, and letting go of a franchise player like him won’t be easy—but if there’s any summer to reshape the core, it’s now.
