The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise seemingly in perpetual turmoil this season. Just when you think the dust has settled, another bombshell drops. This time, it’s the growing speculation surrounding the future of star forward Elias Pettersson.
Rumors of a rift between Pettersson and teammate J.T. Miller have been swirling since early December. While both players have been linked to potential trades, whispers suggest that Canucks management is increasingly leaning towards moving Pettersson.
One team that consistently surfaces in these rumors is the Columbus Blue Jackets. Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal recently fueled the fire, stating that Columbus makes the most sense as a potential trade partner.
Why the Columbus Blue Jackets?
Dhaliwal points to several factors that make Columbus an ideal destination for Pettersson. The Blue Jackets boast ample salary cap space, a wealth of young centers, and a stockpile of draft picks – all essential assets to facilitate a trade for a player of Pettersson’s caliber.
While Dhaliwal refrained from naming specific players, it’s difficult to ignore the potential involvement of Adam Fantilli. The highly-touted sophmore, would likely be a centerpiece in any deal for Pettersson.
Furthermore, Dhaliwal highlights the geographical advantage of trading Pettersson to an Eastern Conference team. “I don’t really, really feel that the Canucks would be super excited if they did decide to move Pettersson in the West,” he explained. “Obviously not in their division, but I wouldn’t want to move him in the West.”
This sentiment is understandable. Trading a star player within the conference, especially to a divisional rival, can come back to haunt a team.
My own take? While it pains me to say it as a Canucks fan, trading Pettersson might be the necessary evil. This team needs a shakeup, and acquiring a young star like Fantilli and a haul of picks could set them up for future success. However, it’s crucial that the Canucks get fair value in return. Pettersson is a franchise cornerstone, and trading him away for anything less than a king’s ransom would be a colossal mistake.
